Quick questions:

Do any of you work in commission only sales?
If so what has been your experience?
How did you get started?

First sales job out of college was commission only. Definitely keeps you motivated but also highly stressful.

FritoLay Route is commission, but we have a low base if certain amount not hit. That never happens though, steady route sales. So a little different and 13 years so far I have never hit low end. Nor do I recall others hitting that low.

Have almost exclusively worked on commission only sales since graduating from FSU.

I was in New Home Sales. Loved it and made more more than my sales managers.

Semi-retired in my 40's with no financial concerns.

If you can sell, that's the way to go.

Good luck!

Thanks! Yes, I am going into insruance sales. I like meeting people, helping them, and making money while doing all of that. I've been in management for more than a decade and need something else in my life. With my experience and stories how insurance has benefited my family and friends it's a no brainer for me.

I truly love the product. I believe in the company I'm going to represent. I have no problem with prospecting or closing. I am really looking forward to it.

I have done it in the hearing aid business. It that industry it really depends on the company's marketing. When they market frequently and properly you can do pretty well. When they don't you can starve. I've had both. The trend now is salary plus bonus or commission and I strongly prefer that.

Most legit companies will offer salary draw against commission unless you're in real estate or something like that. Obviously you have to cover that draw at some point but like any other job if you're not getting it done you are of little use.

I worked for Frito-Lay in the '90's in Jacksonville.

13 years running a route is impressive.

Commercial or personal? Be careful blending the friend and business worlds together. If you view social situations as opportunities to sell only, you will be that guy. Nobody likes that guy.

I have never done commission only sales jobs as I do not work in sales. However, I have owned a couple companies where we hired commission only sales people. If the person was eager and a good sales person they did extremely well. If they weren't that good or tried to coast most days they suffered.

My current company is trying to use Referral Agents instead...essentially commission only sales people. We pay based on what is referred to us, but the sales people are technically 1099 employees as we don't expect them to dedicate 100% of their time to us.

Sold real estate right out of FSU for nearly 20 yrs. if you prepare for the inevitable lows it's great. It took a toll on me though got to hate it toward the end.
