Crazy prop bet.

“The conditions are complete darkness, so no electronics, no light-emitting devices, no drugs of any kind,” said Young. “He is allowed any type of food that he wants. He has a bed in there, he has a shower and a bathtub. He has pretty lavish toiletries like Epsom salts, sugar scrubs, that kind of stuff.”

Along with food from Flower Child (a Las Vegas restaurant), some sliced fruit, almond milk, cereal, and Pop Tarts he has in his fridge, meals are being delivered to Alati during the 30 days, but not on a regular basis so as not to give him any indication as to how much time has passed.

“Food is delivered every three to six days and we’ve randomized what days it’ll be delivered and we’ll drop off six days worth of food so he doesn’t know how long it’s been,” said Young. “It could be three days, it could be six days. He’ll have no idea of how long it’s been, so no watches or clocks or things like that.”

There are five night-vision cameras broadcasting around the clock and the only privacy Alati gets is when he’s in the shower or the toilet cubicle. Alati’s family and a few select others have access to the feed.

They settled for $62,500 on the 21st day. I love these props. These guys are nuts.

The guy who put in boobs for $100k ended up keeping them longer than the bet because of all the tail he was getting with the new rack.

He also gets $10k every year he keeps them in. And he's married now with a kid.

So, they guy in the bathroom paid $62.5K to come out early? Think about that, this guy couldn't stand the thought of nine more days in the dark that he was willing to give up $162.5K.

If I understand correctly, he wouldnt have known how many days were left.

When I read the headline, I thought it was another story about how bad the rent was in the bay area.

So basically, you get paid $100k to be in jail for 30 days but without the threat of dropping the soap or getting shived in GenPop.

I'd give that the biggest college try ever.
In total darkness the entire time? I'm lazy and I don't think I could handle that.

No no. I believe the guy in the bathroom in darkness got paid the 62.5k. There is a toilet in the bathroom. The guy that wasn't in the bathroom in essence hedged his bet as he figured that since the guy did it 20 days, he would do it for 10 more, so he offered him 62.5k to come out so he wouldn't have to pay the full 100k.

I could do 30 days without electronics if I could read and keep my brain active. But 30 days without any interaction sounds like hell.

I would have to think a majority of people wouldn't last longer than 2 days. No light emitting devices would mean you can't read. Pretty much all you can do is eat, sleep. bathe or shower and use the bathroom all in complete darkness by yourself. I suppose you could do like pushups and situps and exercises like that. But other than that I guess you would just have to sit there thinking to yourself or meditate.

I think I'd try it

Would get a ton of sleeping done, prob just fill downtime blindly scribbling ideas on the floors and walls and doing situps and pushups.

Big requirement would be food though, pre-cooked, good tasty food.

I could also work on my rapping.

Some weed gummies would prob come in handy.

Agreed, go stir crazy and bored. Would sleep for 2 then die from boredom.

I'd also hate to not be able to run around a bit. sit-ups and pushups don't stretch the legs.

And go figure these guys are professional poker players. Having the time and money to make these kind of legit bets.

I remember as a kid going to the Lost Sea cave tour they would turn out the lights so you could experience total darkness. The guild would tell everyone if you were in that environment for a prolonged period you could go blind. I think the 3 day rule was more of an urban myth.

Definitely an urban myth. Visual cortex has a critical period for development within the first few months after birth, during which total deprivation of visual stimuli will permanently impair vision, but for anybody who is older than 10-12 months being in total darkness for an extended period of time will not cause visual impairment. The circuits are present and will remain present, waiting for input.

EDIT: and -- Hell NO! I would never attempt this regardless of the amount of money offered.

100k? No way in hell. 300k and i'd give it serious consideration!
At the bottom of the article there is this to make it even harder for more pay.

“The other night, I get a phone call from a random number and it’s Huckleberry Seed. Long story short, he wants to do it for a million, but he wants much tougher conditions,” said Young, who said he’d consider taking the former WSOP Main Event champ up on the offer if a broadcast partner or other third party put up some of the money. “[Seed] said he wants to do it with no bed, no food for the first 21 days, he’d do it for a total of 40 days, and just water. Also, he said I could put some cockroaches in the bathroom.”

I'd need much better odds, risk a lot less to win a lot more. I'm thinking I would put up $10k to win $1mil. 100 to 1 odds. $33,333 per day. I'd take an early buy out if one came along. If not, I think I could handle 30 days for that much loot.

No way. Even if you slept for 14 hrs a day you’d still have 10 hours a day to kill with no real way to do it. Not to mention complete darkness would be really disorienting. I don’t even like to sleep in complete darkness.

No way to maintain your normal circadian rhythm after a couple of days. It would be awful.

Of course, $100k at the end...show someone a briefcase filled with $100k and it makes a compelling argument.

According to an article I read, when humans are not subject to a normal 24 hour clock but are kept in darkness your sleeping goes up SUBSTANTIALLY. Some test group who lived in caves in the 60s started changing from a normal 6-8 hour sleeping 16-18 hours awake every 24 hours. To a weird 36-47 hour schedule where they slept 20-30 hours and were only awake 12-16 hours. So the people thought they’d been in the caves for far less time than they thought as they were switching to a 1.5-2 day sleep schedule with most of it spent asleep.

I saw a similar experiment a few years back and they pulled the guy out because he was losing it. With no way to tell the passage of time and no contact it’s easy to lose your ship.
