Yesterday a lady was walking a dog with her husband when a coyote grabbed her dog, ran away with it, and killed it.

My sister happened to be walking her dog this morning at about 6:45 and when she was attacked from behind by a coyote. Some ex military guy heard her screaming and managed to get the dog back from the coyote. Apparently they're not so afraid of humans because the animal was following this guy back and snapping at him while he was was walking bac with the dog.

Her dog Is messed up pretty badly (deep cuts) and has to be quarantined for 6 months due to not having the most recent rabies shots. I didn't even know Florida had coyotes until yesterday when I heard about the first attack.

ill see if I can get some pics of the dog, not my sister.

There is video of the coyote going through someones trash out there. The news said the community can privately hire a trapping company to remove them. I would be making the phone call today if I were that community, before it snaches up someones kid.

As you can imagine they were all over Denver when I lived out there. My inlaws live on a little island here in Brevard and they have had one on their property before. Crazy. What I heard is that a few years ago some hickelbillys from Alabama brought some and released them for hunting, and they have become pretty prolific in the southeast.

My sisters neighborhood in Hobe Sound sides up to the National Wildlife Refuge across from Jupiter Island and down US-1. The area pets have been ravaged by (they think) Coyotes. You can hear them baying/howling at night.

I heard the same story that FreeFly mentioned. Folks brought them in to train hunting dogs to track them and such. Now they are everywhere and are adaptable survivors who can live anywhere and will kill and eat most anything.

They had coyotes in or around downtown orlando that was eating cats. My neighbor in college park had a coyote chasing her cat. Good times. I did not see a roadrunner or any explosives however.

My SIL's house on Galveston backs up to the channel/jetty and there is a pack of them that live in the rocks. At night they send the female down to run along the fences to try to get the domesticated dogs in a frenzy and try to escape...if the dog gets out, the pack gets it.

We had them close by for a few years. We would see em at dusky dark when the neighbor cut hay. As he made a turn you could see sets of eyes waiting for the mice, rabbits, etc... to run out ahead of the mower. We would also hear them with that crazy howl/scream up on the mountain above us.
Our Jack Russell nearly lost a back leg to one, but the little MF was tough enough to get away. That vet bill was just another reason we called him the $6 million dawg.
Hunters seem to have run them out of our little cove and they are in decline in our area for now...

My dog killed a pack of them in our neighborhood the other night. You guys must have some wimpy dogs...

These critters are everywhere. One was found in NYC recently. If you live anywhere in Florida and your cat inexplicably goes missing, it may have succumbed to a coyote.

We have a pack that lives in the woods across the street from our house. We hear them more than we see them. We lost a cat (we think) to one just a couple of weeks ago.

I think Florida brought them back to the state after becoming nearly extinct. Now they're out of control.

from FWC:

If lethal control measures are necessary, they should be directed at specific coyotes or toward coyotes in a specific area. Indiscriminate killing of coyotes is unlikely to reduce coyote populations, which can withstand 70 percent annual kill. Some evidence suggests that light, indiscriminant harvesting of Coyotes may actually stimulate production and further increase numbers.
There is no closed season on coyotes in Florida. Legal methods of take are by gun, bow or snare. Steel traps and can be used only by special permit issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, and use of poisons to kill coyotes is illegal. A permit is not required to take coyote with a gun and light at night on private property with landowner permission.

Shooting requires little specialized skills, but is laborious. Predator calling, using either a mouth call or tape player, can be used to lure coyotes within shooting range. Calling coyotes is allowed during legal daylight shooting hours, or at night.
