Darian Mensah -Tulane QB- 6'3-200 (2,723 Yards - 22 TD/6 INT) 65.9% Completiion Rate
First Play - One thing I look for is anticipation and accuracy. On the first pass, the receiver does not even miss stride. When was the last time FSU had a QB do this? Jameis.
2nd Play - Big fan of using a tight end to block and then release. Look at all the defenders as North Texas thinks its a run. Mensah sells it well. This is a play I could see Mike using next year. Landen Thomas and Amaree Williams can both run this play. I was listening to Ken Mastroli last week show film to QB's and he says watch a QB's head. Mensah head is steady and you can see very little if any movement. He has sold the run...Bam - TD.
3rd Play - Mensah is very good at hiding the ball. Mike likes to use play action and this kid can sell it. Pass is to the outside shoulder. For a freshman this kid anticipates very well. He also has good ball placement.
4th play...He has some Cam Ward in him. 2nd and Ten. He is looking left, comes back to the right, nothing is there and instead of forcing a poor throw...he easily picks up the first down.
5th play -3rd and 5 - This kid makes you defend the entire field. You watch him and the entire time he keeps his head up, eyes down the field. He slides up into the pocket as he sees the opening.
6th play. He is magic with the ball in his hands. He has his back turned and has sold the ball fake to the receiver coming around. The defender is crashed inside. This is a great play call. Tight end is on the other side and comes clean for an easy TD.
Final Thoughts: The more I watch of Mensah, the more I like him. Lincoln Riley should go after him at USC. Lincoln may win himself another Heisman Trophy. He is a more polished passer version of Vince Young. He does not have an elite arm but I talk about having elite traits -he has three elite traits (Mobility, Accuracy and Anticipation). If he gets bigger and stronger which he should, Mensah will be a high draft pick.
