OK so bear with me for a moment as I will tell you a short story and how it relates to the FSU defense.
My 2 sons played football from the time they were age 7 through HS. That means by the time they were freshmen in HS they had been playing orgnized football and hitting players for 7 years (one was a QB/CB and the other was a RB/FS). When they were on defense they "hunted" offensive players. As they grew and watched games and video they knew which players they would be looking for. There were many times when players came around the end or tried to catch passes over the middle and the next thing they knew their coaches were leaning over them with smelling salts. The boys would hit them so hard and I'm talking about legal hits, that they would end up unconscious or semi-conscious. The boys called those hits slobber knockers (drool running out of their mouths), decleaters (their forward motion was stopped by them flying backwards) and snot bubblers (usually when they were coming to and snot bubbles came out of their nose).
After a while the boys had a reputation around the league and opposing players would try to run away from them. That made a lot of opposing offensive players really nervous especially when the defensive coach yelled, "Light em up boys, light em up!"
Now..........there was a time when the FSU defense had exactly that kind of reputation (particularly in the 90's). Let's hope that is exactly what is evolving with the defense now days. I sure hope so especially when we see opposing offenses running similar pass plays over and over for big yardage.
Time to "Light em up boys, light em up!"
