Fact: Heisman trophies go to offensive players 90% of the time. Usually QB's and RB's.
Fact: Heisman voters have been bucking the norm lately with voting for Freahman QB's (twice) and a couple sophomore.
In my opinion, voters are ready to expand their voting minds to include all players, including defensive players. The #1 defensive player in America is Derwin James.
There are 3 main factors that determine who wins the Heisman.
1. Obviously is the player very talented and does he have the stats to back up his claim. Derwin will be all over the field for the Noles this year. I look for him to have around 110 tackles, 6-8 sacks, 4-6 INT's, several TFL and PBU's. With Jimbo's willingness to use him on special teams, he will have what most defensive players need.. the ball in his hands. He will need 2 or 3 punt/kick return TD's.
2. Winner is usually "the best player on the best team". FSU have a chance to be the best team all season long. Derwin will stand out and be the reason we win multiple games. He will also get to play against last years Heisman winner in Lamar Jackson. That was his first game out. Could be a huge statement if we beat Louisville with Derwin James after getting absolutely destroyed without him.
3. Exposure. Johnny Manzel won the Heisman because he beat Alabama (as well as others). Cam Newton win the Heisman because he lead his team on a comeback vs Alabama (and had great stats). Derwin has an enourmous spotlight to shine if he can take over that game and destroy anyone and everyone from Alabama he will show he is the most talented guy on the field. If your the most talented guy on the field when FSU and Alabama play, you have got a shot. We also have Miami at home, face last years Heisman winner, play the defending National Champions on the road and play the gators on the road. FSU will be in the spotlight, Derwin will shine the brightest.
