Do you have a favorite sport where individuals compete against each other? Golf, swimming, track and field, tennis and race car driving are all examples.

What individual sports did you play or have you played?

***I know that a lot of these individual sports can participate as a team (relay races, race car drivers having a team, etc) but for the most part they are considered individual.

Golf and pool for me! Once shot a 74 a mere 20ish years ago. Now I’m happy to play 4 times a year and currently at nearly a year since I’ve played.

I don't follow the sport closely at all, but every year I watch the Iron Man Triathlon from Hawaii, and generally am reduced to a sniveling bunch of tears when they show all of the athletes' stories.

I really enjoy watching the head to head competition of tennis where personalities emerge and each match takes on a story line.

This is sorry I know but I love bowling in the same way. Corn hole no even I have limits.

Running would be mine but I do enjoy bicycling and swimming as well. I’m not going to win any contests but I generally look at it as alone/ thinking time.

The sad thing is I’ve been running for years and haven’t really paid attention to the FSU track team...

When my relatives visited us from the northeast we went to a bowling ally for fun. I was amazed at how good they all were. They said to me in the northeast, in winter, that is all anyone does on Saturday nights because it’s too cold out do anything else. It all made sense then...

My son learned that when he moved to Toledo.

When I used to live out west, I'd go to all these little towns all over and the bowling allies were always packed in the winter. Sometimes in the evenings that was the most sensible place to go for a beer. Being a southern boy, I had no idea how popular that game was.

As for me, I played team sports growing up, but also did a lot of individual sports. I swam in HS, ran cross country and track, played a lot of tennis, surfed, skated (skateboard) in competitions, rowed a single scull in a rowing club. As an adult, I was into triathlons for a while, competitive skydiving.

As for watching, MMA.

That very impressive! You could kick my butt.

If you allow for auto racing I got caught up in the WRC or World Rally Championship. Was really cool seeing the difference countries they would race at.

Swimming. From HS competing to moving into some short triathlons, I have spent more time in individual sports.

Motorcycle racing. From a competing for almost 10 years to watching. Endurance (team) and sprint stuff. Racing bikes is puts someone in a pretty exclusive club. Even above auto racing as 1) motorcycles do it in the rain 2) even my mom can drive a car fast.

Golf. so casual tho.

Individually, as a kid, my brothers and a few neighbors played a lot of 21 basketball on a dirt court up behind the house out on Lake Bradford. The goal was prolly only about 9’ and there was about two feet under the goal before you would typically get mashed into the plywood side of the shed holding the goal when driving... no blood, no foul for sure. We mixed it up. I was always the smallest, but had the sharpest elbows and a bit of attitude.
At lunch and after school I also got into a lot of games of 21 in high school. Individual scores were tallied, but a lot of it was figuring out what made the other guy tick...who would rebound, who would defend, who was just there to shoot. Mind games.
Year round, we also played volleyball at various “courts” that basically evolved into leaving bodies hanging on the nets...
That led me into some pretty good years at our local fitness center as the old guy who always got on a team in pickup games because of “effort”.
My mom was always a big tennis plus track and field fan, so I watched a ton of matches over the years with her. Tennis not so much now, but following FSU track and field is a real passion of mine. I wish that I could attend meets, but distance precludes that...

I still play a lot of 21 b-ball with my kid. He can beat me now— he’s 15. He’s so dang quick...

How does track and field events work (not just collegiate but all)? The only one I pay attention to are the Olympics every four years. But I’m interested in following more. Is the 3 years leading up to the Olympics all qualifying? What else is there? I say something about the “Diamond...” races now... do you know what that is?

It's the professional circuit for all of the elite track and field athletes. I watch anytime I see one of the events is on, but I'm not that big of a fan to DVR or watch their calendar (though their calendar is on the link I just posted).

As far as playing, the only individual sports I really ever got into were golf and racquetball. I was a pretty good golfer for a long time (low single digit handicap from when I was about 15 through my early 40s), had kids & don't play much any more - but I still enjoy it when I do get on the course. Played a good bit of racquetball for a few years in my late 20s/early 30s, but haven't played in 20+ years now.
As for watching, I'll watch some golf, tennis, and downhill skiing. Love the Olympics, but don't watch the Olympic events outside of the Games every 4th year.
If I stumble across the replays of the World's Strongest Man competitions on ESPN39, I'll sometimes binge watch them.

Boxing is the only one I follow regularly. Every four years though I am completely bought in to whatever Olympic sports NBC wants to show me.

Wrestling. It’s an incredible sport and the elite competitors are amazing to watch. I started in 2nd grade, as did my son. Jake is 9 and is ramping up his conditioning before his third season starts later this year. He’s already accomplished more than I ever did. :)

Wrestlers are known to have some of the best base/fundimentals in MMA as a platform to start. Right with high level football players who are always regarded as being oddly strong.
