I am new dog owner only having my Golden Retriever for about 8 months now. I ve been walking him twice a day since I’ve had him and he did something peculiar today. I was curious if anybody else’s dog has had a strange reaction over seemingly nothing.

I took a new route this morning that took me past a really eye sore of a house that actually had a person pass away from an overdose sometime within the last 2 years.

The house sits on a corner of an intersection and as soon as I crossed the street putting me next the house, he just got suddenly petrified. He stopped in his tracks sitting down while trying to pull his head out from the collar. He also looked frightened.

I was able to encourage him to keep moving and he stayed right behind me until we passed the home. He usually walks side by side smelling the ground. When we got past the home he was back to normal.

I am sure it was nothing but still kind of weird. Anybody else have the dog do something strange for no apparent reason?

Was this house built on an old Indian burial ground?

Dogs have a sense of smell thousands of times better than humans and are very attuned to the body's changes related to aggression and bad intent. Goldmom nailed it. Listen to your dog

This. Dogs freak out for a reason... it might not always be a GOOD reason, but there's always a reason. Most likely he could smell the dead guy's remaining scent - that smell freaks out most dogs. And before you say he couldn't smell something that old, think again, I trained bloodhounds and they could trail you based on a few skin cells you shed a week ago.

The dog could also pick up on the fact that you are creeped out by the house. You may be putting out pheromones that he can smell.
