Dollar Shave Club vs. Brand Name Blades

Several years ago I made the switch to DSC. They were way cheaper than brand name blades, and the quality wasn't too bad. I hadn't even looked at the old Mach 3 blades I used to spend a fortune on for years. They caught my eye in the Publix checkout this week. They are down to $1.73/blade. At that price, my annual savings with DSC is down to $11.96 compared to over $50 when I originally made the switch.

Are those of you who switched to DSC or another blade delivery service willing to go back to the name brand blades with the significant price reductions? I may buy some Mach 3 blades just to see the difference from my DSC blades.

I buy blades once, day after Christmas when all those shave gift sets are 1/2 off, you get a can of shaving cream, two FusionPro5 blades for $5 bucks, get 10-11 of the sets. Done for the year :)

I have used Mach 3 for 20 years. Thought about switching to mail order blades, but the fact is, I only shave about 3 times a week, and the blades can last for months for me before I have to switch. I hear about people getting 5-10 shaves before having to switch blades, and that's just not my whiskers. So the cost to buy a pack of blades once or twice a year just doesn't add up.

I've tried different razors several times over the years, and I just don't like anything as much as the Mach 3, by a considerable amount. I'm glad to hear the prices have come down.

I get these at Holla General for next to nothing...

Those work for you? Last time I tried that type of blade years ago, they destroyed my face and gave a horrible shave.

I got tired of the price gouging, moved to a safety blade set up and won't go back. .28 per blade and they provide a better shave.

I buy my Mach 3 blades from The Ebay.
Used blades, well that's one way to save money. ;)

On another note, I wonder how the trend over the last ~5+ years of growing beards and being a hipster has impacted the blade industry.

10 years ago it would be alarming to see a consultant or banker in his 20s or early 30s with a beard, now it's par for the course. That's a lot of folks who used to shave 4-5 times a week now shaving 0 times a week and maybe once a month.

I am pretty sure they are fairly new. Interesting point on the cost of blades and the remarkable fad of beards everywhere.

The only reasons I wear a beard are to save razor blade money, avoid a bloodletting every morning, and chicks dig it.

I use clippers, instead of blades. I do have a DSC membership, and can randomly click it and get some nice blades for cheap in a day or two, along with some funny reading material.

I've been using a single blade safety razor for years. I bought a box of 100 blades from Amazon for $12. Shave 2-3 times per week and use the same blade until it feels like it needs to be changed. I've still got probably half of the blades left. My average blade cost per year is probably $2-3.

If you think about it, the trend nowadays is reversed from the 70's and 80's. Guys back then were more clean shaven and the women had bushes. Now men are growing beards while the women are shaving their crotches.

I think you get used to what you use. I've always used them with no issues...

I've been using my Braun series 7 electric razor for years, followed by a double blade razor in the shower to get what I missed. If I try to use a blade only, before the shower, it's razor burn all over.

Where else are you shaving? Oh never mind please don't answer.

Yeah, but now lots of other things are being shaved. So there’s that.

I've had a beard for nearly 30 years. Grew it out when my dermatologist recommended it. Been shaving nothing but my neck twice a week for years. Blades last me a long time .

I shave every day-do people not do that anymore?
If I shave on back to back days nowadays, there is some momentous occasion occurring! Grew my typical winter beard a few years ago, the wife (no pics) grew to like it and it saved a ton on blades. DSC 1 time every other month.

As another stated, I'll stay with DSC out of principle. Also like others, I typically wear a beard or at least stubble most of the time. I use clippers more than blades. When I first signed up for DSC, I shaved every day. I had blades sent monthly, then switched to every other month. That was about four years ago. I cancelled my membership about 3.5 years ago and still haven't ran out of blades. Then again, other than my neck, I doubt I shaved my face more than twice in all of 2017

I shave 2-3 times week. Use a mach 3 disposable. Go through maybe 2-3 a month.

No shaving cream for me.

I've been only shaving once a week, at the start of my work week, for a the last several years. I don't work in a traditional office environment, and it's just gotten more casual over the years. I feel like I look a little better with some scruff anyway. I have been using the Harry's blades from Target lately. They work great and a four pack will last me months.

What are we living in the dark ages?! No shaving cream, yikes!!!

Dat’s right my friend. No cream for me.

I shave immediately when I get out of the hot shower. Run the razor under hot water for a couple seconds as then shave away. Never an issue with cuts or rash.

And I would consider my skin and facial hair to be above moderate...no baby face.

I shave every weekday + Saturday evening. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I use the Mach III blades and each one lasts just over a month. I buy a big multi pack at Costco every few years.

You are using some funky razors if you use one a month. It’s got to be tearing the follicle out instead of cutting

Buy Mach llls on an Amazon auto-ship plan at about $2 per blade. Shave Monday - Saturday and go through about one blade per month. One thing that helps is before each use, I clean the blade by running it along the inside of my arm about ten times opposite of a shave stroke. Saw this on you-tube about ten years ago. It helps clean and sharpen the blade similar to a barber sharpening a strait-edge razor.

So you run it in the inside if your arm to sharpen. Now I have heard everything.

My mom got me those as seen on TV Brett Favre razor blades like 3 years ago and I kind of laughed. However, I really loved them! Each cartridge lasted a whole month and I got through a whole year. I've had her get them for me for Christmas for the last 2 years. I think they're called tough man.
