Ethan Hawke quit being a Knicks fan when he stopped getting free tickets

Hawke: “You have to understand, since ‘Reality Bites’ came out once I was I was kind of [a celebrity], I would call up and say, ‘Hey can I get tickets?’ Sometimes they wouldn’t have tickets but they’d always hook me up. … And then I called up one time and they said, ‘That will be $7,800.’ I was like, ‘Oh, um, oh, why is this the first time you guys are charging me?’ They said that you should have thought of that before you went on the [‘Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’]. I was like, ‘Wow, this is real.’

Any back story between Fallon and the Nicks or is that a joke?

After reading the Yahoo! article I can't help but be reminded of the Trey Pettis thread on the TC. Some posters there would no doubt be saying the Knicks are "attacking his right to free speech".

To be fair, if I'm the Knicks, I'm giving a second thought to acting butt hurt over some critical remarks about their coaching staff.

That organization has been avoiding a long look in the mirror for nearly two decades.

The state of NBA teams in NYC these days is so sad. Utterly pathetic as though they're trying to suck.

I went to 3-4 Nets games this season. It's like attending a funeral. The crowd is the opposite of lively, the production value is below that of the disjointed show put on at Doak, entry to the area still is a pain inspite of such low turnout.

Knicks games are no different except 10x the price and slightly more well lit. I don't know why Barclays keeps the lighting down so much, perhaps so you can't see the horrible product they're trying to sell you.

Hard to believe that Ethan Hawke has enough star power to get comped floor seats at MSG.

That was my big takeaway from the story too.
I had to think about who he was, before remembering he was in the movie SWAT. Only it turns out that was Colin Farrell. So I went and looked it up, and Ethan Hawke was in Training Day.

I wonder if the person handing out free Knicks tickets had that much trouble?

I don't think free floor seats would be enough to make me cheer for the Knicks.
I would take the free Knicks tickets and root for the other team. Likely would be ushered out by that clown Dolan's goons by halftime a la Charles Oakley.

That organization doesn't deserve fans.

To heck with him. I liked him in Gattaca and Training Day, otherwise meh from what I have seen of his movies (haven't seen most tho).

Assuming it wasn't a stunt and was him voicing his displeasure, he has the right to his free speech <from the govt> but has no right for personal / orgs to be offended by him speaking out and them replying as they see fit. Starting with removing the comps they give. Perhaps the Nicks should be randomly giving regular fans, who grind out the crap seasons, a couple court side tickets to help solidify the fan base vs cater to entitlement celebs.

To be fair he tells this story on the Bill Simmons podcast, which isn't a place to rant (unless you're Bill), but just two guys shooting the crap. The ripped on the Knicks on Fallon, which is a comedy show and also not a place to rant.

I don't take this as a celebrity whining about anything, just telling a story.

This is just the Knicks being their usual hypersensitive, butthurt selves and Hawke realizing he's not as famous as he thought he was.

Amusing all around.

.......

He did irk me a bit when he was on Bill Mahr I just couldn't put a finger on what it was. People get fired from their jobs all the time for speaking against their employers. Like you said, perhaps they don't think he is as big a star as he thinks he is.

I have no prob w/ the Knicks denying him free tix. It's par for the course for them.
They're petty, he's petty... it's all really quite a shame, they're a perfect match.

To me, Gattaca was a very good story he happened to have the lead in. The critics were not all that enthusiastic and the audience was slightly more in favor of it. It was one of those movies that I ended up liking more than most.

I can say with 100% accuracy I have never heard of him much less seen him before now.

I guess for him there is always Brooklyn he can hit up for free tix.

Knicks haven't won a title since 1973 but MSG is "mecca" of basketball. I truly enjoy their ineptitude. Why people attend NYK games baffles me. James Dolan is real life Happy Gilmore.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I didn't like it BECAUSE of him. I liked the movie, it was right up my Sci-Fi alley. He just happened to have a lead role. I thought he did a pretty good job in it and know it wasn't well thought of. In comparison, critics/fans seemed to like In Time but it fell flat on me, even though I wanted to like it. I wanted it to be a 4.6/5, actually give it 2.94/5.
