And if I did NOT read them, did I really finish the book?

You can say you “read the books” if you skip the appendices imo. But you can’t claim to be a fan without reading them plus the Silmarillon. I’m only a partial fan because I read the appendices but can’t make it all the way through the Silmarillon which is like reading the most boring sections of the Bible.

I did and man was I bored to death by it. A total waste of time.

No. They’re not required to ‘finish’ the book. Although I did read them in the 8th grade (‘79).
