So my mom's at the formula one US Grand Prix in Austin, which starts in two hours.

How can anyone root for the drivers in this sport? You have 3 choices:

A. You're an obvious front runner and root for one of the 2 or 3 drivers that have a chance to actually win a race.

B. You root for the under dog and pick a bottom tier driver and spend the race hoping they luck into a top 10 finish.

C. You pick someone in the middle that you already know will finish somewhere between 3rd and 10th.

I get that the cars are cool, but I don't get how this sport is as popular as it is in Europe. Not really any drama to it.

I follow Grosjean (sp??) with team Haas. Might as well go for the American entry. I also appreciate the sport from a technical perspective and agree that the race lacks drama. Little to no passing and minimal pit strategy (just a few seconds and no refueling).

If Ferrari hadn't shot themselves in the foot the last 3 races, we'd have 2 guys, Vettel and Hamilton, vying for the driver's championship.
So for now, it's let's see who can race for second place.
I wish they would dumb down the technology some.

I havent followed it in a few years but it is a lot of fun to watch. And you have to think of it more as a season of racing than just the single races. 5-6 years ago the championship came down to the last lap of the last race. While the individual races dont appear at first glance to be that intense it changes from race to race. And qualifying is a lot of fun to watch and really impacts who wins the race come race day.

As with alot of things (European v. American) following F1 is for fans who appreciate things playing out over time rather than someone who just wants to see a lot of rubbing and close finishes each week.

I think it really comes down to the nature of the racing. F1 the constructors put so much money and research into the design of the car and if they miss it one year they will not have success. In NASCAR and Indy racing it is pretty much stock cars.

Channel surfing last week and saw that HBO Inside Sports was doing a piece on the first African-American F1 driver. Neat, I'll hop over and check it out. Yup, the piece was on Louis Hamilton.
