FSU 105 Penn 70 The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

The Good

1-0 overall, 1-0 all time vs Penn (picked to finish 4th in the Ivy League). The 27th home opener win over non conference opponents out of 28 games and eighth straight win to open the season. Win number 379 for Leonard Hamilton at FSU.

After a slow start over the first five minutes of the game, the Seminoles started to get on track building a 12 point halftime lead. They really turned it on defensively right from the start of the second half forcing the Quakers to call an early timeout. It did not help as FSU eventually built a huge lead by as much as forty-one at one point allowing the Green Team to start entering the game with about five minutes left.

A typical defensive game you have come to expect from the 'Noles forcing 26 turnovers including 15 steals leading to 17 points. What was more impressive was FSU locking down the Penn shooters in the second half. After Penn shot 50% from the floor in the first half, the FSU shut them down and the Quakers ended the game at just 40%.

Complete domination of the boards at both ends, 49-29, with 24 offensive rebounds.

FSU was able to eventually thoroughly control tempo ending the game with 54 fast break points to 28 for Penn.

The Seminoles did a nice job of handling the various press defenses Penn threw at them.

Even with the high octane offense, FSU turned the ball over only 11 times. And four of those were in the final minutes with the Green Team in.

Player of the game was Malik Osborne with an outstanding line of 18 points and 13 rebounds (7 offensive). With less than five minutes gone, Osborne had already collected 5 boards. And this just days after having the flu.

Anthony Polite finished with 17. Caleb Mills and Rayquan Evans each with 14. Polite provided some nice three pointers and Mills in his first game as a Seminole was very impressive. In addition to his scoring, he did a little bit of everything at both ends. He was a very in your face defender in this game (even took a charge during the contest) and displayed a number of nice offensive moves. Good footwork allowed him to get in between defenders.

Matthew Cleveland with some good work out there including collecting a ball that had bounced off the rim. He showed a good deal of speed and control driving it the distance for the layup. His highlight play was a 2 on 1 break receiving the pass for the slam dunk. The FSU bench was already celebrating the basket before he even caught the pass.

Cam'Ron Fletcher with some good plays as well. His steal and coast to coast slam was one of those plays (51-36) as was getting out on the break for the two handed jam (86-54).

The sold out student section and the energy they provided.

The Bad

Although FSU handled the press, the zone defense gave the offense difficulty mostly in the first half when the 'Noles were still working to get into gear. The Seminoles did not grab the lead until the 15:12 mark.

No FSU lead until 15:12

The first half defense that allowed Penn ball handlers inside way too often. That had to be addressed at halftime because it was a much different story in the final period.

The one time FSU did not handle the press and turned the ball over on the 10 second violation with 25 seconds left in the half. 25 sec

Jalen Warley with the poor foul (his 4th of the game) defending the three point that became a four point play. You cannot run at a shooter like that. The ACC players you will face will eat you up if you do that.

The Ugly

Wyatt Wilkes trying to throw a pass through the lane while in mid air. That rarely works out well. And it did not this time either.

Penn trying a fast break with their center sprinting to the ball that was juuuuuust beyond his reach. Was good for FSU. But still ugly to watch.

Up Next

The gatros (their ...) aka crocs of XXVI in Hogtown on Sunday for a 1 PM tip. The game will be shown on ESPN. The Seminoles will be looking for an 8th straight win over the orange and blue. The aforementioned and unranked lizards beat Elon on Tuesday, 74-61, to open their season.
