The No. 18 Florida State men’s swimming and diving team took home two All-American honors on Friday at the 2024 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium.

Peter Varjasi finished 13th in the 100 breast before anchoring the 400 medley relay to an FSU record-setting performance and 12th-place finish.

Entering the meet seeded 18th at 3:05.15, the team of Max Wilson, Tommaso Baravelli, Tobias Schulrath and Varjasi won the heat, touching with a time of 3:03.82. The performance was the seventh All-American honor in school history in the race.

The Seminoles took down one of the oldest records in the book, erasing the standard that was set by Pavel Sankovich, Jared Pike, Connor Knight and Paul Murray at 3:04.47 in 2014.

“We could not be happier,” FSU head coach Neal Studd said. “These guys crushed it tonight. The record they broke was a very good one. I’m so proud of them.”

Prior to the relay, Varjasi earned his second career individual All-American accolade by taking 13th in the 100 breast at 51.55. Varjasi qualified 13th out of prelims after touching with a time of 51.69 just off his best (51.07).

Varjasi scores in the race at NCAA’s for the first time since 2015 when Jason Coombs finished ninth. Varjasi brings home the 10th All-American honor in the event in program history.

In prelims, Mason Herbet swam his personal best in the 100 back, touching at 45.50 for 24th place. His time keeps him fourth all-time in FSU history. Wilson clocked 45.44, placing just ahead in 23rd.

David Vargas made his NCAA debut, scoring 325.55 for 31st place. In addition Vargas, Jesco Helling and Darwin Nolasco will compete on platform on Saturday at 12 p.m.

“It was a solid day for David today,” FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. “We’ve got one more to go tomorrow and we’re going to make the best of it.”

Prelims Saturday will start at 10 a.m. The top 16 in each swimming event will advance to finals at 6 p.m. The top eight divers will compete at finals and those that finish ninth through 16 will compete in the consolation heat at 5:15 p.m.

The early heats of the 1650 free will start at 3:45 p.m. FSU will compete in the 400 free relay to close out the meet.

The Seminoles are in 20th place with a total of 34 points.
