Just got an email from the FSU Edu wire-- looks like COB Dean (Caryn Beck-Dudley) is leaving for the same position at Santa Clara University...
Lateral move or what?

Other than the FSU COB website looking like it's 1999 I thought she was doing a good job? Any thoughts?

Link below...

COB Dean leaving

I stopped paying attention to who was dean over there. seems like there has been a lot of turnover; i could be wrong.

did she follow melvin stith, or was there someone inbetween?

found this on the net - Under Beck-Dudley's leadership, the college's national ranking climbed to No. 40 among public universities in U.S. News & World Report[/I] rankings of best colleges.

Now, I have two observations to that. First, improving our ranking was mostly a facilities issue, which required budget dollars. Those rankings are arbitrary that way, but i guess we should give her credit for getting those dollars. Second, it wasn't that long ago that the COB wouldn't even list those rankings as a goal. So we really have made a lot of progress.

as for santa clara, i guess its lateral but being near San Fran i'm sure they are better funded. stith left for Syracuse iirc.

Probably a lot more $$$. FSU has gotten a little better, but still has problems with retaining professors, etc. with the amount of money they are able to pay compared to others.

When you can't get top talent faculty then you won't get the top students. uf, UCF, UNF, and Miami are offering a better education than FSU.

I was not a COB grad, so I don't know, but I'd be interested in knowing if that is your opinion or can you back that up? I know the accounting program does quite well.

OUCH--- UNF as well?

FSU COB improved immensely over the years and moved into the top tier. It started back in the early '90s, with improving the professors and students. I think the school will continue to improve.

Maybe in 12Noles subjective opinion. But Bloomberg has our undergraduate COB ranked 85th. That's not good (back when I was going to the FSU COB it was top 50 according to USNWR I think it was 42nd), but better than anywhere in Florida except UF (37th) and Miami (53rd). It doesn't help that the ACC has 3 out of the top 5 according to Bloomberg (ND #1, UVA #3 and BC #4) and we're ahead of only Clemson and NC State (barely they are 86). Although there is the old point of pride that we would be 5th in the SEC behind only TAMU, UF, UGA and barely behind Bama.

The only other Florida schools in the top 135 were FIU at 110 and USF at 129.

Should've stated across the board the education from those schools are just as good if not better. Unfortunately FSU cannot separate themselves from the other in state schools. Our COB should be the University's beacon light since it is not shared with a bankrupting university across town or a third tier academic program like our med school. I don't like to poke at our own wounds but they need to be addressed.

I am a August graduate in the Management program, while I did have some great teachers I also had some really terrible ones. The ones that fell short of expectations were the up and coming Phd students who only taught the class because they were required to. I learned next to nothing in those classes. I did have a few classes with exceptional teachers that had passion for what they were teaching and I actually enjoyed the challenges those classes gave me.

Just figured I would share my .02

Wow....huge loss for FSU....especially right in the middle of the campaign and trying to build a new building. Not a good sign.

FSU has been losing a lot of folks lately and it isn't the good turnover.

Posted this on the academic board:

"In the state performance metrics which decides who gets money and who doesn't, FSU was tied for 5th in the state BEHIND UF, USF, UCF, and West Florida......FSU was TIED with North Florida.

The biggest reason? STEM scoring. Here was the scoring comparison (scale 1-5):

First STEM metric

UF: 5
USF: 5
UCF: 4
West Florida: 5
FSU: 2

Second STEM metric

UF: 5
USF: 5
UCF: 4
West Florida: 4
FSU: 1

What was funny about this....our BOT was very active in discussing all the new football construction projects, asking good questions, discussing being competitive and how we survive in the future.

At the end discussing this....the speaker basically said, UWF, and UNF will taper off, so we will be OK.

No questions asked right after....minor questioned asked later. Didn't seem to interest them much at all. They were MUCH more involved in the discussion of athletic scholarships and the nature of the college football playoff at the end. It was sad."

tough times in FSU academic land.

Considering Dean Stith was there when graduated from FSU 20 years ago, how could you say there's a lot of turnover?

Santa Clara is an exclusive private school w/an endowment several hundred million dollars greater than FSU's. It's a promotion. Can't blame someone for taking a promotion.

She is from the western US. Went to school in Utah and Idaho. She also lost her husband not long ago and may just want to be closer to home.

I don't know about rankings, but thought she did a fantastic job...with cost of living change, she will probably have to make twice as much to stay even...she probably was not unhappy at FSU, but a chance to work in Silicon Valley was too good to pass up...can't blame her
