I recall a radio interview in late 2012 with someone on the SEC team that visited FSU in Tallahassee in 1991 to discuss a possible invitation for us to join their conference. He was doing an interview about us because of the rumors about FSU trying to get into the SEC if the Big 12 wanted us back in 2012. He was very surprised and disappointed over the decision FSU made to join the ACC in 1991 ...but he also said....FSU would have been a very good addition to the SEC back then but they would be a great addition now in 2012. Still strong in football but they have added so much in other sports.
And we have gotten better. The SEC wants to be the premier all sports conference...not just the greatest "it matters more" football conference.
FSU has accomplished much. Multiple Lady's soccer national championships, a ladies softball national championship (with multiple appearances in the softball World Series and a lot of ACC championships), multiple appearances in the mens' march madness sweet sixteen, a couple of ACC mens BB championships, 44 straight appearances in the regionals of mens baseball.
And the investment in sports continues. We aren't the dysfunctional sports administration we used to be. Michael Alford has righted this ship and we are going full steam ahead. He kept Lonnie (our favorite coach at FSU). He hired a great Ladies soccer coach. He is investing in multiple assistants in football. He hired the hottest coach in mens baseball. The FOF breaks ground in December.
FSU has much to be proud of. And the SEC needs to be commended for investing in sports other than football. It's a match my friends. The Big Ten is a great conference as well. But it's different. FSU should invest in the regional integrity of the SEC. The Big Ten has decided to be a nationwide conference. That is fine. That is them. It's not us.
FSU can maintain its independent past culture and still thrive in the SEC. It will be fun.
