Interesting follow up after recent hire of president debates a few months ago.

This is sports related IMHO, because folks wanted to hire a president for just athletic reasoning and many made claims of academics would be enriched from political connections (like was claimed about TK....facts never bore that out).

I am ready to be ripped, shouted down, seen this thread locked, or moved where nobody sees it.......but if you love FSU...and not just the football team (which I happen to love as well). Pay attention, FSU is getting lapped because it's leadership is horribly weak and FSU is in a very bad position (this isn't just about one year info....this is a trend in many areas over many years) and FSU's leadership is asleep at the wheel.

UCF, USF, and UF all got $20-$30 million in capital outlays. FSU got $3 million. None of those universities are run by politicians.

FL leg delivered $114 million in capital funding this session to univs. FSU got $3 million, behind FGCU, FAMU, etc. http://www.myfloridahouse.gov/Sections/Documents/loaddoc.aspx?PublicationType=Appropriations&CommitteeId=&Session=2015A&DocumentType=Budget%20Conference%20Offers&FileName=PECO.pdf…

It seems that if any of this is to be laid at anyones feet it should be Barron..jmho

Not good at all. I know this is a FSU sports board but a lot of us graduated from FSU or have family members that did. For the future of FSU as a whole we need to care about the academics just as much as we care about Football, Basketball, Softball, Baseball, etc. Our love for FSU sports may push us to encourage our kids to attend FSU....let's make sure they are getting the best education possible.

Uh...yeah...not sure how you can blame anyone but Barron for this. Whatever exactly this is, I'm sure the process played out last year based on what happened over the previous years.

Thrasher was appointed POTFSU in September 2014 so this past legislative whiff is all on him. He got UCF a full mission COM, if he doesn't at the very least get ours changed to full mission he is a total failure in my book. Oh and all those big money donors he allegedly had lined up? Never appeared so we were already lied to. And no, I'm not a democrat or liberal of any sort.

We do seem to be lost at sea (academics & athletics), but the re-brand will save us. The money is just going to roll in. o_O

Not defending the new president, but he needs a full year before we can start any type of evaluation.

Please remember the amount of building and retrofitting we've done in the last 20 years, this is what PECO is meant to accomplish. School funding is categorical unfortunately, so this is a snap shot.

The institutions utilize PECO not just for new teaching and research facilities but to keep existing buildings functional with deferred maintenance spending. PECO also can be utilized to retrofit older buildings into new uses, such as the comprehensive research labs critical to building a more stable, knowledge based Florida economy

Below are a few items where FSU is funded in the budget that will be voted on on Friday. Last year FSU received $20 million for the Earth Ocean Atmospheric Sciences Building

Interesting note, at least I think so, under this President we made 12 of 12 preeminence metrics. Prior we have made the requisite 11 of 12.

FSU's leadership void is multi-faceted. For starters, we don't pay particularly well. So our best and brightest people frequently leave for more lucrative jobs. We have way too much turnover in important positions, and not enough continuity to develop effective leadership. (The "interim" roster is really quite alarming). Personally, I like Thrasher just fine, and I think he genuinely cares about FSU. But he is 70+ years old, and will soon enough add to the revolving door syndrome. That said, if you look at the other Presidential candidates FSU was considering, it was a fairly underwhelming roster (just being blunt).

Our public records law is another problem: not too many top-flight people want their existing employers to know that they are considering a (so-so paying) job at FSU. This issue is exacerbated by the perception that FSU often hires friends/relatives -- instead of the best candidates -- thereby further dis-incentivizing superstars to throw their names in the hat.

I was at a football game last year where they honored a Nobel Prize winning physicist. I remember feeling very proud that we had such a mind on our faculty and thinking that they should celebrate at least 1 academic/scholarly achievement at each game.

I've always thought FSU should utilize the same system my "other" school William and Mary utilizes. We (W&M) have FSU's presidential duties split into two. 1) Is our chancellor which is solely for marketing and donation solicitation plus formal functions like graduation and we have had a LONG list of rotating amazing names at that position bringing in dollah dollah bills (when I started it was Margaret Thatcher and my final two years it was Henry Kissinger, now it's been Robert Gates former CIA Director and Sec of Defense for the past four years). 2) Is the president that does all of the day to day administration of the school. Hires and fires staff, manages the budgets, etc... It's basically the difference between a Board Chairman and the CEO. It's worked great for William and Mary as we can get top notch, big name individuals to do the important but part time work while they get the prestige but have competent administrators actually running the day to day mission.

Some legislators tried to pass a public records exemption law this year that would have exempted candidates from state of Florida University presidential searches, but it didn't make it out of committee

Makes perfect sense / one guy raises money and our public profile. The other person is squarely focused on academics. Now, perhaps we already have this in place via subordinates, but a clear leader on both fronts seems logical.
