The Florida State men’s tennis team dropped the opening road match of conference play at California 4-3 on Friday night.
The evening began with an intense doubles round as all three courts had lengthy games to start. California sealed the first victory on Court 3 before Alex Bulte and Youcef Rihane escaped nine match points to mount a three-game comeback before the Golden Bears won the doubles point on the deciding point.
California charged into the first set strong, winning four of the first six sets before the Seminoles responded strong in the following frame winning five second sets. The Bears secured the second point with a win on Court 3.
Erik Schiessl fought with all his effort to force a first frame tiebreaker and ultimately came out with a 7-4 win. Schiessl was locked into a back-and-forth second set before forcing yet another tiebreaker and pulling away again to put the Seminoles on the board. The sophomore has won his last three sets in singles play via tiebreakers and has faced a tiebreaker in all three of his latest matches.
The Golden Bears notched a three-set win on Court 5 before Corey Craig stepped up when it mattered most. The junior had controlled the first set 6-3 before his top-10 opposition fought back with a second set tiebreak win. Craig found his rhythm in the right moment and clinched a fourth consecutive victory. Craig earned his seventh ranked victory of the season and highest ranked career victory defeating the No. 6 player in the nation.
The attention turned towards Courts 2 and 6. Jamie Connel had strung together a valiant comeback after dropping the first set and maintained his composure to win the match in thrilling fashion and tie the match at 3-3. Connel claimed his fourth top-50 victory of the season. Seconds later, California sealed the fourth and final point on Court 6.
