The Florida State soccer team has signed sophomore defender Janet Okeke from the transfer portal. The Canadian has represented her nation at the U-17 and U-20 levels and received her first senior national team call up in November.
The former NC State defender started and played in 10 total games for the Wolfpack. She helped keep three shutouts through the season including two conference game clean sheets against 2023 College Cup semifinalists Clemson and NCAA Quarterfinals participant Virginia Tech.
Okeke was born in Montréal, Canada, and grew up west of the city in Laval, Québec. Her parents, Augustina and Kalu Okeke, were born in Nigeria. She began playing soccer at five years old and competed for her local club team CS Fabrose.
Okeke made her national team debut with Canada in 2021 where she began playing in its youth categories as early as 15 years old. She earned a bronze medal at the 2022 CONCACAF Women’s U-17 Championship and recently appeared in all four matches at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup for Canada during her freshman collegiate season.
Her favorite professional athletes include incredible Premier League defenders Virgil van Dijk, Kalidou Koulibaly, Vincent Kompany, and Greek NBA champion Giannis Antetokounmpo. She also enjoys reading and cooking. Okeke will join the team this spring.
