FSU volleyball defeats Miami in five sets

When Florida State and Miami get together on the volleyball court, fans can expect a close and thrilling match, and Wednesday nightwas no different as the No. 18 Seminoles (9-2, 1-0) prevailed in a five-set win (22-25, 25-22, 24-26, 25-18, 15-10) over No. 25 Miami (9-3, 0-1) on Wednesday night in Tully Gym. FSU has now won five consecutive matches over the Hurricanes and increased its winning streak to 17 games inside of Tully Gym dating back to Sept. 12, 2023.

It was apparent early on that the match was going to be tight all night long as each team traded rallies, and the teams were locked up at 15 at the media timeout. The teams traded 3-0 runs to tie the set at 18, but Miami played its best volleyball of the set late and took set one 25-22.

Miami continued to grasp momentum early in the second set as they jumped out to a 10-6 lead. but some great blocking from the Seminoles jump-started a 7-0 run to give FSU the 13-10 lead. Miami fought back to tie the set at 15 then the teams continued to trade points, but the Noles clung to a 21-20 lead. FSU got big kills from Audrey Koenig and Khori Louis to extend the lead to 23-20, and Koenig ended the second set with her 10th kill of the match to tie it up at one.

FSU got things going early in set three and built a comfortable 14-9 lead, but the Hurricanes continued to chip away and used an 8-3 run to tie the set at 17. The teams traded points until Miami had a quick 3-0 spurt to take a 21-19 lead. A kill from Louis and back-to-back hitting errors from Miami gave the Noles the lead at 22-21, but Miami was able to rebound and take the third set 26-24.

In a win-or-go-home set four for FSU, the Noles jumped all over the Hurricanes as they raced out to a 14-7 lead. Miami was able to cut the lead to five, but that was as close as they would get as FSU forced a fifth set with a 25-18 win in set four.

Miami threw the first punch in the fifth set as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but FSU closed the gap quickly and tied the set at five. The teams traded points, but the set turned when Miami unsuccessfully challenged a four-hit call on Florida State. Following the challenge, FSU scored the next four points to take a commanding 13-7 lead. Miami did force three match points, but Louis put down her career-high 20th kill to defeat Miami.

Koenig and Louis were incredible all night for the Noles as Koenig had a game-high 23 kills on 59 attempts, both just one shy of her career high. Koenig has come up big against the Hurricanes in her career as she is averaging just over 19 kills in her last six matches against Miami. Louis continued to stay red-hot as she eclipsed her career high once again with 20 kills while hitting. 600. Louis has hit .600 or higher in seven out of the Noles' 11 matches this season.

FSU's defense was spectacular as they held Miami to just a .180 hitting percentage which was its second-lowest mark of the season. Taylor Head led the way with 21 digs, and Kelsey Perry was a force at the net as she had a game-high five blocks.
