Big one for Brook Wyckoff and the Noles tonight on the road. Kent State finished 19-12 last season, made it to the WNIT and returns 6 of its top 7 scorers. The Golden Flashes were picked to finish 4th in the MAC Preseason Standings. FSU just scored 113 points against Bethune Cookman with its new and revamped offensive philosophy, they also score over 100 in both exhibition games.

Game Preview:

FSU outscoring Kent 14-2 in the fourth

Latson with 34 points on 13 of 24 shooting

Latson is just an amazing player. Too bad she fouled out. A couple petty calls.

Great come back by the ladies. Came back in the second half and quit relying on outside shooting, especially the 3s, and started to drive the lane. Played great D. Held Kent State to 9 points in the 4th quarter.

GO NOLES!

Really good win for the Noles. Early test against an experienced team on the road. Crowd was pretty good too for a mid major, fun environment.

Latson is special and her passion for the game dictates the tempo and attitude of the team. She’s appointment television.

Got home late and just finished the replay.
My thoughts:

This game showed the downside of only having a 10 player roster. We only had 8 active bodies tonight and I believe 3 starters had 2 fouls in the first quarter. With the early foul trouble the team never really seemed to be in sync.

Latson is really an all star. With the injuries and foul trouble she just put the team on her back and went to work. Not many freshman can handle that responsibility in their first road game.

I really like Obrien. Although she was off tonight and was in foul trouble she just brings a toughness that this team needs. Her and Latson are gonna form a deadly wing combo by mid season.

Our defense looked suspect most of the game as well as our halfcourt offense (hence why it turned into give it to Latson and get out the way). Brooke also has to learn how to use her timeouts, I don’t think she used any in the first half.

All in all, a win is a win. This team is young in terms of playing together but the potential is definitely there. Got down by double digits but fought back.

Any word on Massengil and Gordon? We need them back expeditiously. Sara is a better player bring energy off the bench, def not a starting p

Turnage has a ways to go on the offensive end but I really like what she does on the defensive end. Had 7 rebounds, 3 blocks, 1 steal to go along with 3 assists . Played 34 minutes tonight.

Valenzuela probably has the smoothest shot on the team. I just wish she shot more.

Via FSU sports information:

Freshman guard Ta’Niya Latson proved to be unstoppable again, piling up 34 points to lead Florida State Women’s Basketball in a hard-fought road win at Kent State, 80-71, on Thursday night at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center in Kent, Ohio.

It was the most points by an FSU player since Morgan Jones had 36 in double overtime vs. Clemson on Jan. 21, 2021. Latson went 13-of-24 from the field and nailed four 3-point field goals in the comeback win for the Seminoles, who clawed back from an 11-point deficit.

Big plays were made down the stretch by Taylor O’Brien and Sara Bejedi. O’Brien’s 3-point field goal gave FSU a late two possession lead at 70-64, and Bejedi helped ice the game away with free throws toward the end of the game while taking a commanding presence with the ball in her hands.

FSU out-scored Kent State 21-9 in a defensive-dominated fourth quarter, holding the Golden Flashes (0-1) scoreless through much of the frame. O’Brien finished with 11 points and Bejedi added 12 for the Seminoles (2-0).

Latson dropped 12 more points in the third quarter as FSU let Kent State get out to a run early but clawed back to make it a 62-59 deficit through three. She fouled out midway through the fourth quarter, but her teammates prevailed and put the game away.

FSU held a 39-38 lead at halftime, aided by a key 11-2 run that included two 3-point field goals by Bejedi and consistent stops on the defensive end. Latson had 17 of FSU’s 39 points at the break as the Seminoles out-scored Kent State 22-1 in points off turnovers. Kent State responded right before the end of the half with an 8-0 run of its own, as Lindsey Thall led the Golden Flashes with 12 points at the break.

Some early foul trouble hurt the Seminoles in the first quarter, as they were whistled for seven fouls and trailed 18-17. Latson scored eight of FSU’s 17 points early, getting to the basket at will. Mariana Valenzuela played big minutes off the bench with five points in the opening frame, including a 3-pointer from the right wing.

Florida State returns home for a Sunday matchup against Georgia State at 2 p.m. at the Tucker Center.
