The No. 24 Florida State women’s tennis team (2-0) defeated Alabama State (0-2) 4-0 in both matches of the season-opening doubleheader on Sunday. The Seminoles won their season-opening match for a 15th consecutive season.
Maria Juliana Parra Romero and Eva Shaw began the day with a ranked victory sweeping No. 117 Melisa Mekic and Diana Craciun 6-0 on Court 1, improving their doubles record to 2-0 this spring. Laura Putz and Maelie Monfils clinched the doubles point on Court 3 defeating Carmelle Vial and Cleanna Pickel 6-2.
The Seminoles dominated singles play, winning the first set on all six courts. Monfils clinched the first singles point with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Pickel on Court 5. Shaw won her first singles match of the season in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 on Court 2. The match was clinched by freshman Mary Boyce Deatherage, defeating Vial 6-1, 6-1 in her first career dual match.
Match two began with another quick start from FSU, Monfils and Deatherage defeated Ena Arnautovic and Kesmat El Tawil 6-0 on Court 3. Tina Li and Putz captured the doubles point clinch with a ranked victory over Mekic and Craciun on Court 1.
FSU won 36 of 38 games during singles play of match two. Shaw won all 12 games on Court 1 to defeat Craciun 6-0, 6-0. On Court 3, Monfils defeated Vial in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Li clinched the match point on Court 5 defeating Pickel 6-0, 6-2.
Florida State will travel to Malibu, Calif., for ITA Kickoff Weekend beginning with a match against Georgia Tech on Friday at 4 p.m. ET.
