FSU's slow paced, Pro Style offensive system and playcalling may prepare our players for the NFL draft but will help team's with lesser talent have a real shot of beating our Noles. Not, to mention it is just downright boring to watch. A system that depends so heavily on close to perfect timing and execution, hitting quick passes in small spaces leaves too little margin of safety. So, unless or until the OL play improves and Jimbo opts for less predictable play calling our defense will have to keep us in games. The problem is quite a few of our upcoming opponents have many more weapons than BC. The following games will be dog fights in which without much better offensive production we could very possibly lose.
Clemson, Ga. Tech, UF, NC State, UM and possibly Louisville, too. BC showed all the other teams on our schedule how to shut down FSU & Jimbo's offense. Answer: Stack the box to stop or slow down Dalvin Cook & our running game. Until, Jimbo and FSU become much more productive with its passing game, including successfully completing a number of intermediate and long passes, every smart Defensive Coordinator is going to stack the box and throw in blitz packages too. Here's hoping that Jimbo will strongly consider using more uptempo and motion packages to his standard no motion, slow paced offense. Without forcing defensive players to move out of their set positions finding mismatches that often result in big plays will continue to be far and few. And, Who else on the board is wondering why George Campbell & Jaquez Patrick are not getting their numbered called? To Jimbo's credit he surprised BC's defense by going against his usual play calling pattern on our first series and only successful drive. The first play was a pass. He ran a jet sweep play using pre-snap motion with Kermit Whitfield and Golson completed some intermediate term passes. And then, he played into BC's game plan by reverted back to trying to establish a run first strategy against a strong 7 man front, while throwing lots of 3 to 5 yard passes which were very easily covered most of the time. As I watched the Gator defense easily contain Kentucky's "no motion & slow motion", the Wildcats offense looked way to familiar to the one FSU uses. Here's hoping that Jimbo will opt to look at his tendencies and makes some adjustments and finds a bigger & stronger center to anchor our OL.
Go Noles!
