I noticed while on my evening constitutional that there are quite a few people who just sit in their garages and watch the world go by (at least, the part that passes by their driveway). I was wondering what the attraction was, so last night I took my folding chair and sat in my garage, with my cigar and shatterproof bottle of OE800. I don't think I got the experience though. Mayhaps it's because I don't have the tri-panel sliding screen door for the garage. Anyone here a garage sitter? What's the lure?

You never know what goes on inside the house that makes people want to hang out in their garages. But at least they're not staring at the phone.

Cigar and booze? I bet it wasn't that bad.

The cigar was a Gurkha Cask Blend, so it was quite enjoyable.

My wife does it when she's watching the kids playing in the front yard and I'm working in the garage. Open up all the garage doors and it's nice weather right now. Our garage faces west, I guarantee you won't catch us in the garage come summer time.

I have noticed some folks do that rather than porch. I agree it's probably mostly due to absence of porch. Lot of houses in South Florida don't have porches, so that could also be it. My MIL does that at her place, but she's in one of those smaller older folks neighborhoods and her front door is right beside her garage door, no porch. Quite a few folks do that in her neighborhood, watch the others walking or driving by.

I will echo the absence of a front porch thought.

I have a neighbor that does this a lot when the weather is nice. He does have the added bonus of a TV hanging on the wall of his garage. Normally he opens the door in the evening, sets up a chair and just hangs out with the TV on in the background. Sadly for him, the view from his garage is just of the houses across the street and nothing special.

My neighbor and I used to do this most afternoons when the kids were growing up - we'd put out the lawn chairs and watch them play. At 5 o'clock we'd break out the cheap red wine, open a box of crackers, and be mellow when our guys got home from work. Suburbia at its finest. 1980's style, of course.

Would that be a box of cheap red wine?

There was a lot of that in my old neighborhood and that is because it was a cookie cutter development that did not have big yards. I moved to a neighborhood that is not like that with nice size yards and I never see it now.

When we were house shopping in Florida I was surprised by all the screen doors on garages. I had never seen or even heard of that before. We like to sit on the porch as much as the weather will allow so I guess it makes sense for those without a porch.

I always figured it was people from the big cities like NY, Philly or Baltimore that used to sit on their stoops and chew the fat with the neighbors. In the neighborhood where the house that I pay for is, people have sofas, TVs and bars set up in theirs. I enjoy my balcony over looking the water all year long.

Those people sit in the garage because their car is usually in the front yard...on cinder blocks.

There are a lot of people in my neighborhood who have complete set ups in their garages. TVs, couches, pool tables, kegerators, etc. But we also have a few people that just sit in lawn chairs and smoke and watch the world go by.
My wife wants me to put pavers out front so she can sit and watch the dog. We don't have grass in the back, just the pool and gazebo.

Wait, these people have room to move through their garages? Mine is so full of boxes and kid's toys that I can barely walk through it.

If it's in a box and has been my rule is to toss it or donate it.

I sit on the back deck my wife built. Otherwise I smoke my cigars in the garage on rainy days or when it's cold.

It's not a routine thing for us but we do it from time to time when the kid is playing in the driveway and side yard. We have a side entry garage and a large parking pad at the end of the driveway so nobody from the LR can drive by and judge us. We also have somewhat of a pie shaped lot with very little back yard but we have a good size side yard on the garage side.

I have a neighbor who opens his garage up and plays video poker on his tv. My kids ask, "why do they watch tv in their garage?", good question, no clue. I like to open the garage door when I am doing certain projects to get air flow, but I don't just sit and watch the world. Thats what the back deck is for.

unfortunately that's not my wife's rule. lol

When I lived in Volusia County it seemed like everyone did this. Most houses had no porch or deck, ones that did faced west.
