Got to meet a former Nole FB player today

Add losing @ Auburn in '90 after a botched fumblerooskie attempt.

Yeah - That was still when I took football seriously. Man, that loss was devastating.

Yeah, and that was pretty much the last game I took that kind of seriously. Watched it in the hospital, where my wife was for several weeks.

I still took losses tougher after that than I do today, but never like I did before that. Something about objectively recognizing that was one of the top 2-3 most gut wrenching losses in program history, and yet it wasn't even a blip on what we were dealing with in real life certainly had some calibration. Sometimes I wonder if I hadn't had that exact experience I'd still be a raving maniac, or if I would have grown out of it anyway. Probably would have had to with all the bad losses over the years.

I am the same way. I remember being devastated after losses once upon a time ago. My dad went through all of his issues with cancer and passed away, a year later I got divorced, and I supposed I got a new perspective on things. Losses don't hurt nearly as much beyond being a bit frustrating as I love my team. Like you, I wonder if I would have been that crazy fan who was a bit too invested if I had not experienced those things.

My personal turning point came following the Miami loss in '02 (where we blew a 27-14 4th quarter lead). My future in-laws at the time had rented a beautiful place on Jekyll Island for all of us for the weekend, and I listened to the game on the car radio on the way to meet them there with my then future (ex) wife. I'm surprised she married me eventually because I was in an awful mood after the loss and basically ruined the trip.

I realized after this that I needed to put FSU football in better perspective, and being a fan has taken much less of a toll on both myself and those around me since.

To be fair, Fred Taylor trucked our defense.
...But we had done enough to win regardless if not for Samari macking on the cheerleaders on the sideline (or whatever he was doing) during Green's TD play.

If not for a small amount of weed that got Randy Moss kicked out, Thad would've gone 24-0 as a starter & won consecutive NCs AND Heisman Trophies.

Can you imagine the destructive force that would be Moss & Coles running deep routes with P. Warrick in the slot. Even Jeff Bowden couldn’t screw that up

Yep, this. I was at that game in the swamp.

Like you said, it's back when I took football seriously, that loss hit me hard. Weekends are much nicer now, football is a fun distraction but I'm pretty happy regardless of what happens on Saturdays. I disconnected my emotions from football during the Lost Decade and the 2013 quenched my desire for a title, I thought I'd never see FSU win one again and when we did I was left so satisfied that I'll never need that feeling again.

As for Busby winning a Heisman if Moss was in school. Lol let's not get carried away. Smh.

Busby was an effective game manager but was extremely inaccurate on any passes of intermediate or greater length.

Yep, it was the Lost Decade. I can't believe how I would let the outcome of a football game dictate my wellbeing.

I'm seeing a lot of similar stories here. Seems to me that during the Dynasty years, when we rarely lost any games, each individual defeat stung more...and they usually directly prevented us from winning (or at least playing for) a national championship. Unfortunately, I think we as fans necessarily...for the sake of our individual sanities...became used to losing during the Lost Decade, and the ability to handle nonsuccess still holds today during the current downtrend the program is suffering following the very pleasantly surprising apex of 2013.

Or we all got a little bit older and realized we were letting our emotions be dictated by young men playing a game.

That was back when I screamed at the TV -
a LOT.
Now I just yell...or whine. Or talk to the Lord. o_O
My pet brick comes in handy on game day. I can launch it at any time and it helps keep my blood pressure in check. Well, most of the time anyway.;)

Thad was from Pensacola and was very underrated.
Bobby used to say he was undefeated and that was the best compliment you could give a QB. Ole Buzz.

Another thing that helps me is these very boards. If we are sucking during a game, I can vent my frustration on here instead of letting it build up or subjecting people around me to it. Then there's always the collective post-game therapy...namely the thoughts that @Bill From Tampa offers each week...that helps to salve my wounds.

First time I saw Thad play was his senior year of high school, when his undefeated Pace High team came down here to play my local high school (Pasco) in the semifinals of the state playoffs. My guys won a thriller, putting it away on an INT with a little over a minute left & Pace driving in a 1 score game.
Most people figured that the winner of that game would win the State title the following weekend (the other semifinal was between two teams with less than stellar records ). Pasco did just that, winning the state title handily in a game that wasn't nearly as interesting/exciting as the game against Busby's Pace team.
