Son and I are gonna finally go a Metallica concert.

Been to like 5 with him but are looking forward to this.

Anyways I am thinking of moshing, never done it so maybe it’s a bucket list thing?

If you have tell what it was like

Sorry bud I'f your going with your son might get a$$ kicked, how old are you by the way and mosh pits normally ends up in fights, if you're in the northeast wear Fsu gear, there's supposed to be a gang up there that will have your back

I spent a lot of time at punk and hardcore shows growing up.

Earth Crisis, Phat Cat’s, Melbourne, 1997. I thought I was going to die in the pit.

My son played in a hardcore band. Every once in a while my wife and I would go to one of his shows and stand in the back. No way would I get near the pit. Then but especially now.

Got sort of caught in a mosh pit at a Living Color concert freshman year ('90-91) in Orlando. Broke my Swatch watch and I was done. True story.

I try to avoid mosh pits but because I like to get close sometimes they’ll generate around me. What sucks is while most people are just innocently slamming into each other there’s always some little %*^% guy who’s about 5’4” who instead of just running into people elbow and shoulders first like the rest, is actively punching and kicking. And it seems like half the time that little %*%^*% is wearing a full Batman costume or some other prick gear.

I used to dabble in my youth. I remember that every now and then one would form at CPA. One night I brought my crazy jersey roommate there. He was an interesting guy. Was a walk-on on the football team but couldn’t keep his grades up. Ended up playing baseball for a smaller Florida school.
Anyway, I was hammered and enjoying the pit when I came around the circle and saw him on the edge watching...so I gave him a forearm as I went by. I laughed as I saw him look around angrily. I did it twice more before he saw me and he came in after me. As he tried to reach me some guy flailing around the pit smacked him inadvertently- as is want to happen. Well...Jersey boy thinks to himself “hey, you hit people in here” and lays the dude out. Pit turns into a brawl, police show up, place empties out. I kinda felt bad.
He’s also the reason cash hall stopped have hay rides after he started a giant brawl at the last one. Fun guy.

Anyway, enjoy the pit.

Don't do it, you'll thank me later, a lot of unwritten rules like baseball
I agree.

I used to, back in my careless youth at concerts like Anthrax and Corrosion of Conformity. It was a lot of fun. A lot of skinhead aholes that were fun to demolish.

Wouldn't do it now though. Too much downside. Wouldn't look good to show up at a client meeting with a black eye.

I agree that there's probably not much moshing at a current day metallica concert. Average attendee age seems like it'd be around 50yo. Just a lot of older guys commiserating about how good Hetfield's voice used to sound.

Lol at Phat Cat's. That's a blast from the past, had totally forgotten about that place. I believe it's Meg O Malleys now.

I went to a lot of heavy shows when I was younger, the type of pits where punching was the norm. A lot of fun back then: young, drunk, angry at whatever teenagers think they should be angry about. I remember getting knocked out cold in a Pantera pit when I was 20, but that didnt deter me. Looking back now, I think how stupid I was, and how lucky I am not to have gotten really hurt.

I was drunk at the NiN/Helmet concert at the Bayfront in Pensacola ~1996 and decided I was going to be Billy badass and hit up the mosh pit...........how I didn't get knocked out of my wheelchair is a mystery to this day, I got hit REALLY hard 3 or 4 times. When I went to the bathroom I was bleeding my my bottom lip and had the start of a nice black eye. No way in hell would I think of doing it now.

I did at Lollapalooza/ RATM concert back in the mid ‘90s. At the time, I thought it was cool. Now I think to myself, I’m lucky to be alive and it was really dumb. People were out to blindside and hurt each other. This wasn’t a packed in pit. Plenty of room to get a running start and pummel someone.

Okay, so I’ve read your opinions and experience and decided I will just go and enjoy the time with my son!

The mosh pit thing would be all about “ me”, and take away from us spending quality time together as a father/son thing

Never on purpose.

I went to a sevendust concert once in Chicago in which I was in the middle of a mosh pit inadvertently and I got out quickly. I had been watching the opening bands on the floor of the house of blues. Got real crowded before sevendust started and then the first note, the whole floor erupted into a mosh pit.

My wife, 35, a couple of months ago purposefully went into a mosh pit at a descendants concert. She had fun.

Only time really happened was at a RATM concert in NYC in 96. Had no choice. Really small theatre and the whole place was general admission/mosh pit. Had to leave the room to get a break. Lost a shoe and took train back to NJ with 1 shoe on. Good times.

Been in at least 20, never ever seen a fight. If anything people are looking out to assist if someone goes down. Now you gotta be ready to get bounced around and bruised but rarely dangerous.

If you get in over your head it's generally very easy to duck out of the pit.

Nicest one I was ever in was in a small club outside of dc at a violent femmes concert. I was bouncing around in front of the stage and went down. Thought things were about to get ugly when a dozen hands grabbed me before I hit the ground and lifted me up, put me back on my feet....AND put my hat back on my head! Great show.

I say do it. The worst that could reasonably happen is a black eye or two and some busted nose or teeth. If you haven’t done it and want to do it, why not?

Although don’t do this...this may be the stupidest thing I’ve seen in a mosh pit.

Who are you going to have hold your walker? You're son?

I moshed back in the day, call it '88-'99. Busted a couple of skulls

Once, Statesboro GA (Blind Willie’s circa 1996) at a Stuck Mojo show, thought I was back on the football field. Had a blast lol. Would absolutely NOT do it now. :D

When I was 16 I did it at a Helmet show. My buddy and I along with two other guys ended up clearing out a big circle. I didn't know what to do then so I sort of drifted back into the crowd. One of the guys started skipping around the circle. It was pretty fun.

1990 - Orlando- club called The Edge.

I was probably there with you. I graduated from HS in 1990. Used to go to a few clubs such as The Edge & Visage and enter the pit occasionally. The smart move was always observe what kind of people you had in the pit. Once I saw arm flailers or high stepping kickers in the pit I never entered or I bailed out. That's when people get bloodied up.

Both those clubs back in the day had some pretty decent concerts roll through there. I saw Nine Inch Nails for the first time at Visage in 89 or 90 before he got huge. Good times.

Biggest one I've experienced was in 2000 at the Georgia Dome - Metallica/Korn/Kid Rock/SOAD/Powerman 5000
One of the first big concerts I had ever been to and I had a blast. The floor was packed and a few pits formed but I was more of an observer. The floor was so packed that nobody could really move and the only way out for water or to piss was to crowd surf to the front. It was the only time I've ever crowd surfed but it worked out well, just ask the people around you to put you up then passed to the front about 50ft and helped down by security then walk along the front of the stage to the side. Probably some pictures from a disposable camera somewhere in my house.
