Wife and I are building a new house and I would like to make it a smart house. Anybody have any feedback on what they are currently using or have experience with full single vendor systems? How about just a controller and multi-vendor devices?

My Father-In-Law just set up automation with their doors, lights, etc, all controlled by his IPhone, was not too expensive, and I believe AT&T did it. Very cool setup.

My buddy's house is all run through Sevant, it is awesome, it all runs off a Mac, you need to budget about ~$1k per room you want tied in. It controls everything, stereo, TV, Lights, security system, cameras, garage. You name it.

I have a Sonos system for my surround sound, I have 4 flat screens, and 18 speakers hooked up to it. It is pretty rad, but only runs the AV.

I was told a year or so ago that Control 4 was good for the price. Down side is that it is no DIY, if that is what you are into.

We have control 4 in our home. We've been very pleased. Just understand that, like a computer, you will need to upgrade gear from time to time. Be sure to have the whole house wired for sound, video, and LAN distribution while its at the studs. I would also have a dedicated equipment closet built with its own vent/fan system to ensure that the gear stays cool.

Crestron is considered the best. Control 4 is probably the best value.
