Hurricane Michael insurance claims

That’s what insurance companies do. Delay delay delay. Find a way not to pay.

I have family that have been through several hurricanes and none of them have experienced the type of the crap job the insurance companies are doing to Michael victims. My son is just now getting started on repairing his home. He has yet to hear from his insurance for they will actually pay for, but he has a legal adjusters who has a reputation of getting the $$ from the insurance companies. He really had no choice because if he continued to wait on them his house would have been completed ruined. I have some coworkers who are living in their houses with open ceilings and roofs covered only by a blue tarp. They to are getting jerk around with a hurry and wait attitude from the insurance companies.

USAA came through for us pronto with a $16k claim check. After the deductible and depreciation on old roof we ended up $8k out of pocket. Fallen Trees removed, new roof, new fireplace vent, new fence all completed.

I feel very bad for others left hanging with serious devastation.

My carrier is Tower Hill (based in Hogtown) and they were pretty prompt with the first check. But that check only covered about half of the damage. Now they're dragging their @ss about the remainder.

our insurance company was actually pretty good. We have 22k in the bank. Our problem is that we can't find a contractor to actually show up. We thought we had a guy out of Alabama, but he kept hemhawing and making excuses for weeks. Then he wanted money up front to buy materials. In this current situation with more work than he knows what to do with and he needs help buying material? no go.

Now trying others and having trouble even getting someone to come give us an estimate.

We just need siding, soffit, and one piece of metal roofing!

You realize once it’s too late that you shouldn’t just go with the cheapest company on your home insurance. It’s worth paying to be with a company you can count on.

Very true but choices among the best companies are limited in Florida. On a similar note, get proper coverage for heavens sake. But still, I picked one of the better companies and got plenty of coverage and here I sit...waiting.

One of my son in PC just got his roof done finally. They got the run around a lot too. Fired a roofer or two until they nabbed a decent one that was in the neighborhood ( I think)

well I finally got someone to show up, BUT

He wants to see the adjuster's report to know what the insurance is covering. He says they probably didn't include everything that is necessary/required by code, etc. My hackles went up and I'm skeptical that he just wants to milk this thing for all it's worth.

What does the LR (the ones who are following this thread) think? I asked him to just give me a quote for what he thinks we need but he said they like to quote based on the adjuster's report then fight for more from the insurance company. Sounds shady to me.

Insurance told my parents they didn't have any significant roof damage and to nail shingles back down.

Roofer comes and looks and says, yea you can't do that it'll leak you need a new roof.

Insurance won't come back out to look.

Any reputable contractor doesn't need access to an adjusters report. If they can't assess damage on their own then you need a different contractor.

If shingles have been lifted as a result of hurricane, there isnt one carrier going to tell you to "nail them back down". It's bad faith for them to do that and would result in punitive damages. You probably dont need a new roof either. The truth is probably somewhere in between. Have them hire an independent adjuster and send the result to the carrier. They can always sue if you need to.

Apparently the common practice is for a field adjuster’s report to be short on the roof. But a quote from a roofer got my insurance to correct the shortage fairly promptly. Now about the rest of the house...

After the next major hurricane in Florida, after these companies yank us around again, I bet we're gonna revolt.

Talking with someone from the building inspectors office this morning concerning a project we are working on. Just rambling we ended up discussing the issues of the storm recovery. He said in August of '18 there were 21 licensed and bonded roofing contractors in Bay Co. He said now there are over 200 working in Bay Co. Most are very reputable but some are rip off artist (his words). He also said the biggest complaint he is hearing is the insurance companies dragging claims out and just being a-holes (again his words) He came for So. Fl and has been through several storms down there and said the destruction here is far worse than any storm he ever saw including Andrew and Katrina. He also said the response from insurance companies and charitable organizations is the worse he has seen. He did say the religious organizations have been good but still lagged behind the efforts he has seen in other areas hit by hurricanes.

I am not sure why the area seems to have been forgotten, but it has. However there has been a lot good come from this also. It has been neighbors helping neighbors, strangers helping strangers, communities organizing cleanups to clean streets and neighborhoods. Yet there is still some areas which are beyond the scope of local volunteers with our chainsaws and pick up trucks to handle. Even where the down trees have been largely cleaned up it still looks like a warzone with the majority of homes with blue tarps covering big holes, debris still piled up high along many roads. Homes will be years being rebuilt. The landscape will never be the same in my lifetime. I heard the number of 40% of locally owned businesses will not re-open. Many of the restaurants which have re-opened are doing so with adjusted hours due to lack of employees as the population has decreased by about 20%.

The beach area is largely unaffected though 2 golf courses have closed. For much of the morning on Oct. 10th the forecast had the eye moving ashore around the eastern part of PCB. As much as we hate how bad Mexico Beach was hammered we also know it had not taken an easterly jog about 50 miles offshore and went ashore on the eastern part of the beach Panama City would have been totally wiped out but the beaches would have suffered pretty much what PC is going through now. Having the beach largely intact has allowed some of PC to find temp housing and supplies there. If it had been destroyed too this area would be in the worst shape of any area in the US to ever be hit by a hurricane.

divinnole, your Building Inspector guy is correct about the insurance companies. I selected a contractor endorsed by the insurance company, all agree on the extent of the damage and the cause but still incomplete claim payment.
