Just got a quote for a 24 SEER variable speed Carrier....16k!!!

Anybody else priced one recently??

From just glancing at the Carrier website it looks like that's the most premium model they have.
Infinity 24 with Greenspeed Intelligence?

Just had a new system put in around a year ago.
American Standard 5 ton 15 SEER - around $7k installed.
House is one story just over 3k sq ft.

I just signed the paperwork for a new one to go in at my house. York 5 ton, 14 SEER $6700. One story house 2800 sq ft.

It is the infinity 24 greenspeed - we have major humidity issues in the house so I know the guy was trying to give me the best option - he's also working in some duct work reconfig and removal of a central dehumidifier. I was just thinking with all that it might come in around 10k...geez

$16k seems on the high side of reasonable for that job.

We had 5 estimates from $6k to $12k for the compressor/handler replacement with no ductwork updates.
The American Standard unit has a humidity control/variable speed motor and it shows with the temp vs 'feels like' display on the thermostat.

I have friends that have had American Standard systems installed. They are super efficient but apparently have a lot of service issues.

I think Carrier is overpriced. My hvac is a Bryant. Same as Carrier except they paint it tan and it cost much less.

We have a HVAC program at the school where I teach. The instructors there say you will never make up the cost for anything over 16 seer. They both have 15s in their homes and that is what I put in when I had to replace the old one 3 years ago.

24 seer is why you are getting that price. You are looking at law of diminishing returns at that level of seer. Get like an 18 seer and you will be paying a lot less and saving just about as much energy.
