a complete quarter of smart and sound football by FSU was remarkable. Norvell had produced some of those prior to the Louisville game, but the second half at Louisville was the first complete half of football we played in a while.
So it got my attention.
That didn't happen against Notre Dame. Although that was a feel-good game, it was unsatisfying in that it did not inspire a belief that the team was committed to maturing. But it did leave me believing that a good football team was possibly forming.
The team played a mature second half at Louisville, even in defeat. I was at the Jax. State game, and I felt the low points between Notre Dame and the first half against Louisville. While it was great to see a solid half of football followed up by an arguably good football game against Syracuse, my optimism was heavily dosed with a concern that the progress was illusory.
In times-passed, I coveted the idea of Dino Babers coaching FSU. I remain unconvinced that Dino won't be remembered as a great coach, and I did not discard the Syracuse victory as being significant.
CMN has shown me that he can inspire men. CMN has likewise provided no reason to believe that he lacks character. So CMN has earned my trust as a football coach.
Any notion of trust must include the latitude to work with the staff of his choosing.
His staff.
He deserves that. If I continue to see maturity, I will remain happy.
A good game of football happened here today. The satisfaction flowing from that accomplishment is markedly different from any feeling FSU football has inspired in recent recollection.
Good quarters have become good halfs. Good halfs have quickly turned in to a complete responsible game of football. This is what I have long waited to see from the team. They are becoming men. That is a journey that will not ce complete by the time they leave FSU, but college should certainly instill in its students a commitment to becoming accountable, and I saw no commitment to accountability for years. I can see that now, and good things must flow from that. It is impossible that anything else could result.
CMN deserves to be proud tonight. He has helped these players grow, and if Coach Fuller continues to help CMN achieve that goal, then he is the right man for the job. FSU must start there, and remain there for a long while before considering anything more nuanced.
No matter what, it feels great to be an FSU fan today.
