An out-of-town driver following his car's outdated GPS system drove off of a demolished Indiana bridge, killing his wife in the passenger seat, deputies said.

Iftikhar Hussain, 64, drove the couple's 2014 Nissan Sentra off East Chicago's Cline Avenue bridge - which closed in 2009 and is barricaded with bright orange barrels and cones. The car burst into flames after the 37-foot-plunge into pavement below, The Times of Munster reported

Oops

This is one of the subtle ways the machines are taking over.
They have been sentient for awhile........

WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH WAIT A MINUTE!!!!????

So this dude drives off a bridge and he survives, but his wife doesn't, and we're supposed to believe he's just soooo stupid, he did this because he was listening to the GPS?

They're FROM Chicago, it's not like they're tourists. I am willing to bet that dude noticed this 'glitch' at some point, figured out a way to make sure his wife wouldn't be able to get out of the car, and possibly how to survive the crash himself.

Well, when I was driving around Scotland last year using GPS it took me to an unpaved path through a farm to get to the next road. We were in kind of the Middle of nowhere in the "highlands" so my cell had zero reception and Tom Tom kept insisting it was the only way and would not recalculate without it. So I drove through some farmers land on a bumpy rock rock and dirt road for about a mile before getting back on pavement.

Plus I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had Tomtom or even the cellular services like Google Maps have you do stupid stuff like make a giant circle or drive down a road for a mile then do a u turn then make a left rather than just make the turn at an intersection.

Yeah, me too. And if I see a bunch of bright orange signs that say "bridge closed" or "road closed" I don't typically weave my way through them to continue plunge to my death.

great. i'll be driving through the Alps this summer, will have to keep this in mind.

There were two other problems we kind of blindly drove into thanks to Tomtom that trip. It took us through a windy and incredibly tight road THROUGH a castle in Wales in one of the smaller old fortified cities. I had some type of French small diesel SUV/station wagon Peueguet they don't even try to sell here and the other driver had a jeep coming at me so we had to go about one mile an hour to "pass" each other. It was ridiculous.

The other is where in between London and Bath (or at least Cheddar and London, I think it was past Bath) and there's a military area where they train spies kind of like the Farm in Virginia and Tom Tom took us right down a road with "Don't get out of the car or you will be shot" signs everywhere.

If you're that guy you just hope that at least one of you bites the dust, because if you both live you'll never, ever hear the end of it.

That made me laugh.

It's the kind of thing that I've actually had nightmares about. I think that GPS is overrated. I turned it down in my new car because it becomes outdated on a periodic basis and 99% of the time I know where I'm going anyway. And if I don't, I use my smart phone. Duh....

Anyone who can no longer read a map has lost a valuable skill.

Trust me. As one who oversees road construction projects, you'd be amazed at how many people read those warnings as "road closed for everyone but me".

THANK YOU!

This dude may have just committed the perfect crime.
Do Sentras have built-in nav systems? Maybe it was an old Tom Tom?

Either way, how do you miss this?

I watched a Two Million dollar boat run aground 5 or six times in a row in Miami once. The skipper was probably staring at his chartplotter(gps) rather than paying attention to the large and obvious red and green channel markers. You can't fix stupid. That story doesn't surprise me at all. Ranks right up there with the idiot that drove his 1200 hp boat over 70 feet of beach and into a restaurant last month.
