I was looking for something else, but stumbled across what I found to be an incredibly interesting fact-- a list of Independent D1 football schools from 1980.
I was completely astonished at what I found.
A whopping 8 (+ ND) of the 14 schools currently in the ACC were football independents in 1980!

FSU
Miami
Syracuse
BC
Va. Tech
Louisville
Georgia Tech
Does this play a role in the fact that the ACC gets so little respect nationally? I say w/o a doubt.
While other schools in other conferences have been squaring off annually for 75+ years, the best, most historically relevant programs here have been associated w/ the ACC in far fewer years.
Hated rivalries are cultivated over time.
So is a national profile.
