Interesting article on former FSU QB Malik Henry

"Malik Henry sits on a metal bench outside the Independence Community College fieldhouse, rubbing his hands together to stay warm on a 40-degree evening. He’s recounting the highlights of life in this town: There’s a Wal-Mart, McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, a steakhouse … and that’s about it"

So it's a lot like Tally, only we have multiple Walmarts, Mcdonalds, Taco Bells, and Pizza Huts.

Henry is taking 23 credit hours this semester. He juggled seven classes during the season. He had to be aggressive with his schedule in order to get done in December and enroll somewhere else in January. Still, 23 hours is too much.

He's taking 23 hours during football season? Who is advising this kid? Rushing him to instantly mature and heaping an overwhelming academic load on him to get him back to a big time program as soon as possible seems like a very stupid way to help him deal with his issues.

I thought the same thing Go. I understand the normal thought is to get back to a major school quickly, but if the issue is immaturity, it seems like letting him mature might be wise.

I didn't even think you were allowed to take that many hours in one semester. That's pretty inhumane, even if it is just a Juco.

“He’s come night and day since January,” Brown said. “I’ve nearly cut him 20 times. I’ve suspended him. I’ve done it all. He’s a lot better since then, but he has a long way to go.

That is a good way to make a fresh start.

You can if needed but you have to get the Dean's permission at FSU. I needed to boost my gpa for law school as I had basically a 3.8 coming out of UF, USF and PHCC for dual enrollment, then got a 1.9 where they threatened to kick me out my first two years at FSU as I seldom went to class and then got a 3.8 or something my last two years at FSU to get back over a 3.0. So to offset my two slack years, I took 24 hours (I believe, it might have been 21-25) and ended up with all As and one or two A-s BUT I had to get the Dean's permission to do so. I think it's anything over 20 hours but it might have been anything over 18 hours. It's been too long for me to remember 100% accurately.

Oh, and I should point out that I cut out all of the extracurriculars when I took my plus-sized semester unlike Malik who has to play the foozeball. Granted they were real Economics and Finance classes at FSU and not cake community college classes, but I still imagine it is ridiculously difficult to manage that schedule.

My dad signed me up for 23 hours my freshman year including ROTC. No joke classes. Calculus, chemistry, engineering, etc.
I burnt out hard and bombed a few classes the second semester. Third semester I got sick and had to leave school. When I went back I took over my scheduling and suddenly became a much better student...

Malik is still very young. I don't understand the rush. Weinke was 26 or 27 when he played for the Noles. Malik needs to find himself and I hope he will No reason for 23 hours.

From my understanding, the hours of classes that he takes won't affect his eligibility later, but I may be wrong. There is no reason for him to not take a year or two off and focus on classes. Or just go to the Canadian Football league.

I'm pretty sure he wants to graduate in December so he can enroll in a big school in January and compete for a spot during Spring practice. He could take a smaller load, stay at the JC and graduate in the Spring, then find a new school. He's angling for 3 years of playing time at a big school. His clock started ticking when he enrolled early at FSU. Five years to play four.

Good grief. Someone would have to be on a steady diet of coke to pull that off.

Bottom line the kid has some skills and if he gets his head right he may become a contributing member of society. Sadly it looks like his main goal is to get in the NFL; which is great except for the odds against him. When you take that many classes you really don't learn anything, you are taking classes to move on; instead of learn. So even if you are a 1st rounder you likely blow all your money anyways; kind of sad how guys with great gifts and talent aren't smart enough to realize if you just dial it back a little you can change lives in your family for generations.
I also enjoy how some people always find a way to talk about themselves regardless of the thread. Shows me a lot about the person.
