And amazingly this will be the first time since 82' that we're paying close attention to what we'll be buying. We had that home built to spec and the contractor had a budget of around a grand, which bought us a pretty nice French Door GE with outside cube/water dispenser. When we sold that house 5 years ago we redid the kitchen and threw a middle of the road fridge in there, I believe my realtor brother picked it out. We currently have been putting up with a 12 year old GE, which came with the house we bought 4 years ago. Ice/water dispenser is glitchy, cold balance sucks and item accessibility is driving me batty. My wife's a foody and the thing is always packed to the gills, getting a jar from the back of the shelf is like brain surgery. It's French door, is built in with the standard 69, 36, 30 dimensions, freezer on the side. As far as what we're leaning towards, it appears the bottom freezer units with 2 refrigerated doors will help with accessibility, any other features worth it? The units that keep the frozen and cold air separate appear to make sense, some have the separate middle drawer which might come in handy. Brand wise, we have a couple friends who have the Subzero's, but we just can't justify that cost. Seems like the LG and Samsung get the better reviews. We're looking at throwing down 2-2.5 on it.

Home Depot and Lowe's has some really good sales going on for appliances. HD has great pricing on Samsung's. Definitely get a bottom freezer and French door style top. We have an Armana. Don't get a counter depth version. Have no idea why these things are made.

Thanks, Unfortunately the nearest HD is 45 min away in Waynesboro. My options nearby are Lowes, Sears, Best Buy, Sam's and Costco. I'm learning towards Sears just because I'm older, a boomer, sentimental and I believe they have commissioned sales people. Everyone seems to be priced with a hundred or two of each other this LD weekend. There are so many friggin models it makes price shopping more difficult.

I bought mine at Lowe's, 99% the same as HD and they will match price. Sears does not, I don't believe. I had all Whirlpool stainless appliances in the house when I bought it, so I just recently replaced my refrigerator with another Whirlpool. I have a 25 year old Jenn Air in the garage that is still humming away that gets used in the summer for extra beer storage for cookouts and at Thanksgiving for leftover overflow. Those things last. Sears Kenmore? Not so much. Maytag has gone downhill too. GE is okay, at least their repair techs get more training in their specific products.

I also have bought refrigerators for clubhouses in the communities/HOA's that I manage. At the end of the day, the bottom freezer is okay unless you don't want to stand there and have to bend over or squat down to dig - I'm an old boomer too and I did not want to do that. I went for the standard side by side and I am glad I did. Ice and water through the door and I'm a happy camper.

Samsung has a big promo going on now so their refrigerators are being hyped. Not just at HD, but also at HHGregg and other places.

we shopped around when trying to decide if we wanted to replace a part on my existing fridge - they are amazingly expensive with virtually no long term warranty!!

Kenmore sucks, IMO. We just redid our kitchen and ditched the Kenmore appliances. We bought an LG fridge and range, and a KitchenAide dishwasher. The LG dishwasher didn't get good reviews, that's why we bought another brand (we didn't care about having mismatched brands). The LG fridge is very nice. French doors, pull out freezer. We're really happy with it.

Ha- Kenmore and LG are made in the exact same factory! Take a picture of your LG and post. I'll post my Kenmore and I bet they are identical!!!
I inherited the kenmore with the house btw. This is not necessarily and endorsement for the brand

Bought my Kenmore in '98 and it still works great.
Here is the model number of my Kenmore... 795- LG

I have a Samsung. The ice maker is the worst ice maker in the history of ice makers. I bought the $2500 stainless steel unit for $750 at Lowes. It appeared to have a stain on it they couldn't get off. I took my own cleaner in there and did a small spot and got it to come right off. (they were unaware I did this) The manager told me to make an offer, I said $600 he said $900..we split the difference. If I had done my homework I would have known about the ice maker issues. I have since been told there are a few models with the same issue- takes forever to make ice and the ice maker sporadically quits working. you can reset it by holding a button in but who opens the door every time to see how much ice is in the box. Other than that the fridge is nicely designed

I've had two Samsung refrigerators and have had great luck with both. The only reason we still don't have the first one is because we left it when we sold our last house.

I haven't had a problem with my ice maker on a Samsung and have had it 9 months now.

Well, it's enclosed so I really rather not screw with it

Yeah
Are you stuck with getting a built-in?
Pretty much, d/w on the left, cabinets above, and enclosure panel on right, then a window box. Seems like most of these are close in width, height, some change in depth. Went out yesterday, salesman at Sears was a Hispanic, twenty year student in college. Thought he was a customer he was wearing hip casual wear, turns out they had casual day. Blew my stereotype out of the water, lol. I was picturing an old, gray haired guy wearing a short sleeved, white dress shirt containing a pocket protector.

When I bought a new washer last year, I went on some chat boards to see how folks liked their particular brand. Samsung washers generated the most negative comments, while LG had the fewest. Not scientific but I did find it helpful - went with the LG and am very satisfied.
Does this translate to other appliances? Don't know, but maybe you could do the same?

We had an enlightening day. Lowe's was particularly void of any sales help, Sears had the most help. We're intrigued by the Samsung four door unit, love the looks of it, and it has THREE separate cooling sections. It also snazzes up the bottom freezer section, wondering if these additional features merits the 2900 price. There is grumbling about the ice maker on this one, we noticed the ice maker bins are nonexistent on the French door units. We're gonna miss our big bin below our ice maker, although we only use for parties or helping fill a cooler. Another advantage to the side by sides is larger drawers, although it's pretty close. I was a bit disappointed in the lack of shelving space on French door left door. Still, I think we'll go that route because we just don't use the freezer that much and we have a deep freeze in the garage. Leaning towards a Samsung with door in door in door feature with the twin cooling and ten year warranty on the motor. We're also strongly considering a couple LG's, very similar features an reputation.

I did that to research my fridge and a couple other things along with reviews from confirmed buyers.

The showcase doors on the Samsung are pretty nice and convenient. The through the door ice machine and water does take up quite a bit of space on the other door, so those shelves on the inside of that door fit very little.

Lol, I'm overthinking this as it is, you have given me yet another angle to consider!

Thanks, yeah the through door ice is a must feature for us. As far as the smaller drawers, we might have to put some of the produce on shelves and in the wide meat drawer. We do have a problem keeping watch on produce freshness because the drawer is so cavernous.

I was looking at an LG when I got the Samsung with similar features, but when I saw it in person, the LG showcase door seemed cheaper and I dont think the shelves on the showcase door opening slid out like the Samsung did. There was a samsung one that I was gong to get that acutally had 4 sections with side by side doors and if you used very little freezer space you could choose to use a small section of the total space for freezer the others could be all refrigerator. It was a little too tall to fit in the space in our house. IT didn't have the showcase door but still seemed nice. Model number was RF23J9011SR

One thing I will add about the French Door models- they are not at all energy efficient. You lose a lot of cold air from the ice maker and the doors do not always fall closed. Our kids are constantly leaving the door cracked because they didn't push it in all the way. The right door closes pretty easily but the left has to be pushed closed. If it's left open, the ice in the bin will melt and the. Re freeze as a solid block of ice. This obviously will not work and I am constantly using something to break up the ice that's stuck together. Drives me nuts but would probably be more annoying if I didn't have the in-door ice
