Love or hate the Jags, Shad Khan the owner/billionaire is a man of vision, and we could use some of his mojo. Jacksonville is still stuck in the 1950s and this man is single handily changing the image of the city. Take a look……..

Now if we could only move the jail from it's water front property in downtown to the undeveloped land at Cecil Field on the West Side then maybe people may start making their way back downtown and buying condos.

It'll take quite a bit to make downtown Jax appealing. You can see the potential, but a lot of work would need to be done.

I simply believe Khan is trying to take advantage of an opportunity to make even more money, but I wouldn't call the guy a visionary. He's not doing anything unlike what's been done plenty times before in this country or world.

"... Our proposal to partner with the City of Jacksonville ... "

ahhhh THERE it is! I was wondering if he'd put his hand out for public money for this. Ironically, a small bridge just a mile or two(?) from that location collapsed a few weeks ago and still hasn't been fixed. There are several others in the area that have designations, like this one had, as being substandard. Also close to the project is a shell of a condo where the construction was halted when part of the parking structure collapsed. This was around the same time as the real estate bubble burst, so there's no real incentive to continue that project. I'm guessing the cost of demolition is higher than the worth of the property at this point?

I'm not sure what I'm saying about all this, and I definitely don't want to be political about it. Maybe this project will help those other problems. BTW have you been to the landing lately? Neither have I. The last time I went though it was a ghost town, especially the upstairs food court. I thought one of the shop owners was going to mug me.

FWIW ...

I don't know if you lived in Jax in the 50s but I did. Jax is a long, long way from what it was then. It's not Atlanta or Orlando, but who wants that! And the jail, it was moved off of the waterfront several years ago. And it will take much more than moving one government building to get people back downtown.

Will the First Baptist Church fight the development behind the scenes like they did when Touchdown Jacksonville was trying to bring the team to city?

Don't get me started on First Baptist. They are the major reason Jacksonville is being held back from greatness. They like buying up all of the liquor licenses and selling back at prices that no one is willing to pay resulting in no night life at all in Jax. A city with River front property shouldn't suck as bad as Jax does.

well, they moved the jail across the street from waterfront... the jail has a river view, partiatlly blocked by one luxury high rise condo and partially blocked by the shell of the abandoned luxury high rise condo... All this is a couple of blocks from the Maxwell plant.

I grew up in Jax, left for college and swore I'd never return to the biggest little city in South Georgia and succeeded in doing just that for nearly three decades. This place has drastically changed, and overwhelmingly for the better, but I still cannot get used to local cultural habits of some folks who think it is NORMAL to do things like park their trucks on the "grass" in their front yard. Of course these are the same people who have the giant gator head in the back window.

I do know that there are Jags fans who just think it's cool that there is an NFL franchise here. (My nephew and his bride even took their honeymoon to London this season timed to catch the Jags game)
When they realize that the team is also supposed to win on a somewhat regular basis, I'm sure there will be an uprising.

I'm here mostly because of family and a pretty decent job. Otherwise I could still be in Dallas and loving it.

I've lived in Jacksonville for almost 11 years. Downtown sucks, downtown has sucked since I've lived here and downtown will continue to suck.

The city overall has changed a ton since I've lived here and I've gotten used to it. My wife and I both moved here from Dallas (her in 2010 and I in 2004) and JAX was a culture shock for us both. It's a much slower paced city but it has a lot of potential, which is probably why its growing by leaps and bounds.

People bitch and complain about the lack of things to do in downtown but Jacksonville being so spread out makes everything inconvenient and not worth the drive. That isn't limited to downtown either.

Neither my wife or I are opposed to going back to Texas and have never ruled it out.

Developers have tried to attract people downtown for years. There is simply no demand for it. Everything is available somewhere else, it's easier to access and not inhabited by vagrants.

There has been talk of redeveloping the Landing and I hope that comes to pass because that place is absolutely terrible.

Downtown was livelier when I was growing up than it is now. Big department stores, places to eat, shop, etc. And it was far safer as well.

The last time I attended Mass at Immaculate Conception (in conjunction with my granddaughter's Baptism) the back of the sanctuary had homeless people who were also at various levels of diminished capacity. Father Murphy had to speak to a woman for trying to take various things that did not belong to her. Those folks just didn't use to be around.

The Jaguars have a ton of money to spend under the cap. I believe that they are one of a few teams that has to spend money to get over the minimum. Could be a surprise team next year.

The Jaguars will sign Rodney Hudson, Mike Iuapati, Pernell McPhee and Byron Maxwell during free agency and draft Leonard Williams in round one and surprise with ten wins next year.

You were a bunch of players and a year off, but not a bad prediction.

Should have signed Hudson and drafted Williams instead of Fowler.

Hate to say it but Downtown Jax is too close to the murder capital of Florida, the Northside.
But...but...we've been told that Jacksonville is the Paris of the Americas. I then assume Paris is the murder capital of Europe?
Jacksonville is an awesome place to live if you are in the right area. Ponte Vedra and Northern St. John’s County are amazing. I am 20 minutes from St. Augustine/Vilano Beach and less than an hour to Amelia Island. Riverside and San Marco areas offer some good nightlife and unique old school neighborhoods but are one street away from disaster. Great beaches, golf, an up and coming NFL team with an awesome owner, and multiple above average music venues.

Paris maybe not. Lots of rednecks and gators yes. Just work hard, make good money and you don’t have to deal with it.

That's true about almost every place. Minus the gators.

Maybe Western Europe...

"Paris has 30.18 murders per 1 million people
Rome has 29 murders per 1 million people
Amsterdam has 23.75 murders per 1 million people
Berlin has 22.75 murders per 1 million people
London has 16.25 murders per 1 million people
Madrid has 12.18 murders per 1 million people"

I'd always heard Kansas City called the Paris of America due to all of the fountains there.
