Amidst a plethora of remakes, many of them awful or ill advised in the first place, I am happy to see that Jaws is being re-released on June 21 to coincide with its 40th Anniversary. I believe it will only be screened for two days in 500 theaters nationwide.

My first thought is: Holy crap, it's been 40 years!!! My second thought is: Yes, I'll be there. What a great film, even more amazing when you consider the technology at the time, the budget limits, and the youth and inexperience of the director.

I remember seeing it at Britton Cinema in Tampa. Probably watched it 5 or 6 times that summer.

Really looking forward to this.

I was around 14 or 15 when JAWS was originally released.
My dad and I got scuba certified then and I got to clean the bottom of the sailboat before we would race it on the weekends.

Here I am in a canal, under a sailboat hull so its dark and murky cleaning off the slime from the hull...all the while looking around for the great white that I'm sure is behind me ready to eat me.

When a tarpon would go by my heart would skip a beat.

I asked my mom to be my date. She saw it in theater & it has been one of my favorite movies since I was a kid.

I would play "the carpet is the ocean" & jump from furniture to furniture. It helped the carpet was play.

Jaws is an absolutely terrific movie that, for the most part, has aged well. My boys (9 & 12) have both watched it numerous times & love it.

Glad they're re-releasing, instead of remaking, it.

I read the book first so I had a good idea what was going to happen during the movie. Like when the severed head pops out. The audience jumped. I laughed.

I read the book as well. Biggest difference I recall was that in the book, Matt Hooper, the Marine Biologist, had an affair with Mrs. Brody. Definitely did not need that in the movie. In my world, none of the movies after Jaws ever happened.

As a child, I also thought twice before going into a swimming pool after I saw Jaws. I knew it was impossible for a great white to make it into a swimming pool in suburban Miami, but the thought was still stuck in the back of my mind.

i didn't think 2 was that bad. Jaws 3d and revenge were awful.

Jaws in the theatres! I'm there!

I read the book first too. But I don't recall expecting the head to fall.......I'm sure I jumped. I must have been 12 years old though. Only 2 things that stand out now are like tolkien mentioned, there was an affair and the sex scene had this weird thing about Mrs Brody being upset about Hoopers bulging eyes and his fanatical intensity. She finally said I think "Hey, I'm here too".....and he apologized, LoL. And the other thing is that in the movie Hooper survived, but in the book the shark caught him inside that cage and made a meal of him.

I haven't been a huge champion of Jaws all my life, but I think it's aged incredibly well actually. It's a really, really fine film, and what I wish more films would emulate. It's just such a tight, well executed story that hits all it's beats. It has well developed characters, without drawing them out either way too much, or way too ham-handedly. It's just great. I'll go see it in the theater if one of my kids wants to go with me.

I think it's Spielberg's best work for sure, and definitely belongs among the very few best American post-code films. It's very close to flawless.

My favorite movie of all time. By far.

You don't see the bad guy until halfway through the movie.

Quints Indianapolis speech is epic. Robert Shaw was masterful.

"We're gonna need a bigger boat"-Classic.

Redefined the way "big" movies were released.

Love watching Jaws during July 4th week. We leave running all day similar to Christmas Story on Christmas Day.

Anti-shark cage. You go inside the cage?
Cage goes in the water, you go in the water. Shark's in the water.

Our shark.

I saw it opening night in Tally driving 75 miles from Altha just to watch it. Like others I read the book before hand. I felt the events in the book which were deleted from the movie made the book more enjoyable but the movie was better w/o those scenes.

Two things really stick out about the movie experience, first there was very large black woman with 3 young kids right behind me. When the head fell out of the hull she screamed like I have never heard, she fell to her knees and while loudly sobbing starting praying and begging God to make it all end and to kill that "SOB thing." The next thing occurred the next day as I went diving. It was a dive where I normally would max out my bottom time long before I ran out of air. The conditions for diving were perfect with great visibility. But every time a cloud would move and cast a shadow in the water I was quickly looking over my shoulder and behind me for the shark. I could not get the theme music to quit playing in my mind. What was a normal 50 min dive with plenty of air remaining, turn into an out of air dive in 35 mins.

I reached the point diving where I would find a lot of excuses not to go and on a few dives reached almost panic mode when I did see a shark. I really considered giving the sport up. I now make 100-150 dives a year and have encountered sharks on many dives but it does not bother me at all. The movie IMO is one of the all time greats and for that time frame the special effects are incredible. I will still watch it every few years and even knowing the out come, will be incredible nervous throughout all the shark events.

My parents tell me stories about seeing Jaws and The Exorcist in the movie theaters. People fainting in the lobbies, running out of the theater screaming, dad told me one lady threw up while watching The Exorcist and another guy was clawing at his face, eyes and hair saying he was "sullied by the demons".

Jaws is an absolute American classic and is a 10/10.

Jaws 2 is a solid movie and I like it a lot. It's an excellent 9/10.

Jaws 3d is one of the worst movies I've seen. It's a 2/10 at best.

Jaws the Revenge is probably given too much (*&^ because of being compared to the first one. It's not absolutely dreadful and more of a 5/10 maybe even a 6/10.

In the pre Shark shots Spielberg set us the scenes and let our imaginations do the work. That probably impacted us more as children about getting into the water. When it came I was 8 and should not have been watching this in the theater. It was rated PG which today would have easily been PG-13 or R.

I was eight when that one came out and did not see it in the theater obviously, but I do remember being in the common areas of the movie complex and seeing people run out screaming and crying from the movie. Nasty stuff and still a very disturbing flick. Would never watch it again.

The Exorcist is an American classic. They don't make horror films like that anymore, it got under your skin and in your mind. If you were religious, it got into your soul and defecated all over the place.

Good to know. I saw 1 & 2 in theatres. 2 was sufficiently good that I eventually got both on DVD. I started watching part 3 from the beginning on TV, and found it so dreadful that I turned it off and decided I was done with any more Jaws sequels.

And a lady who was afraid to get a glass of water.

My mom lived on Hilton Head island and said the beaches were empty after it came out. No one would go in the water. People cancelled vacations because of it. Luckily this was back when HHI was not a tourist trap and didn't kill businesses are anything.

Saw it at a drive in movie. Greatest experience to see that type of movie.

They should do a double feature of the Creature from the Black Lagoon (which they always do anyways) and Jaws at the "drive in" screen projected on to Wakulla Springs. I'd definitely go.

If you go in thinking Jaws the Revenge will be anywhere near as great as the original Jaws....you will hate it. If you go in thinking this will be a decent giant "monster" movie it is perfectly enjoyable.

This makes me think of my dad every time, who happened to land an acting gig on Jaws 2 with speaking lines. Even had a scene with Roy himself. Jaws is 100% an American Classic.

OP back again. Glad to see so many people have these great memories of seeing this film. If I think about it, there are very few movies I have seen that are as memorable for me. Not sure if it was the time (I was 9 years old), the movie itself, how basic the fear was . . . Regardless, there is something about this movie. I'm ordering my tickets today as there are only two shows on two dates: June 21 and June 24.

I will still stop and watch Jaws whenever it's on. The Indianapolis speech still gives me chills.

No kidding !? Would it be ok if I know which character / scenes he is in?

When I have time tonight or over the weekend, I'd like to pull out the DVD and take a look.

.......................Ten Thousandth Post to Me !!

But why is it 4 posts this afternoon all say 10,000 ? **

10,000 posts in 13.75 years would be 727 posts a year / 2 posts per day.

...........But you can't even trust the system.**

Oh I see, unlike some systems, on Rivals now every old post gets an updated number as well.

So 2 per day.................not bad

He is in the scene before the diver gets mauled on the boat when the guy yells "we're going for lobster", that's not my dad but he's next to that guy. His name was sparky in the movie and when they're bringing the guy who got bite on board his lines were "get him in for Christ sake, get him in". And he's in the scene when they bring that guy to shore where there's the ambulance, he's standing right next to Roy.

Now what the hell !?!? My post count has gone DOWN? Last week I got at least as high as 10,001 and then quit looking, but then 1 minute ago I see it at 9,993. Although I'd like to know how many I've done over the years, it's not important in the scheme of things, LOL. But it would be nice to know how this new Rivals platform works. I can't figure it out. I don't know how the "likes" accumulate either.

I'm on vacation when it is being released.....damn it.

I don't think a movie like this would be a success (or at least not a success, or popular, like it currently is) if made today. I love it, but think it is too slow and not enough action for many people today.

Am I wrong about this?

I was rewatching my dvd the other night. Some of the early parts were a bit hokie or slow. But once they get out on the water for the hunt / search, that part completely stands the test of time IMO.
