I can't believe we never really heard much about Kermit getting a chance to return punts in the spring, unless I just overlooked it. Obviously rule number one is catch the ball so he must have struggled there, which is extremely disappointing because he was as good as you'll ever see returning punts at the high school level.
I think we know his lack of involvement on offense last year had to be a lack of understanding the playbook, lack of understanding option routes, etc. He makes plays every time he touches the ball, but he just doesn't get reps and unless you believe our coaches hate big plays on offense, the reason has to be because of mental aspects. We certainly didn't have good slot play outside of the times we moved Rashad and Rudolph inside.
I've posted this before, but if there was EVER a year for us to use a Kermit Whitfield type of guy effectively, it's this year. As of right now I think we have average to below average QB play, there's no reason Kermit shouldn't have 2 bubble screens (especially with a potentially dominant edge blocker like Ermon Lane), 2-3 jet sweeps, and another touch or two out of the backfield every game. We're gonna have to manufacture some points this year as opposed to our QB our executing everyone... get the fastest guy on the field the ball and let him be the fastest guy on the field. It's been a long time since we've had an elite make you miss type of receiver in the PW,Tavon Austin, Sammy Watkins mold. I'd love to see Kermit bring a mild version of that in 2015.
