Ha, actually I am looking for something to keep me busy while listening to mindless prattle on meetings. Hoping anything will jump start me getting off my duff and make 2018 my get in shape year.

I used to have a boss who would run on the treadmill when on calls. Amusing to hear the whir in the background but nothing else, she was like a running ninja.

@OrlandNole

I'll be 40 next month and prefer bodyweight exercises because they seem to result in less injury to me. I only do pushups and pull-ups for the most part, but when I do use weights, its for light squatting with dumbells.

All of them!

I prefer dumbbells and barbells, but will use kettlebells for swings walking lunges.

What do you mean by adjustable weight?

I use kettlebells and barbells and a squat rack/bar. I favor:

- kettlebell swings (really good posterior chain workout), gets heart rate up. Can do tabata internals (hiit)
- barbells, mainly do for shoulders. Presses, extensions and such. I dislocated my right should a bit over a year ago, so I have a set of 4 exercises I rotate.
- pushups
- squats
- running
- biking
- jumping jacks (set of a 100 doesn't take long, do a couple of these a day)
- dips (fewer now because of shoulder)

Dumbbells are more practical than kettle bells.

Adjustable weights??? Would that be a bar with weights you can take in and off?

I'm going to buy the below at some point this year. I already have a bar and weights...not a lot of weights, but enough to get a very good crossfit type of work out in...about 300 lbs worth. Also have a good jump rope and mats. All I need is a row machine or airdyne bike and wall ball, and I'll be in business. ( I don't care for the box jumps, hard on my knees).

here is the link I was talking about.

I'm 62, so I use the machines, much safer. You don't need a spotter around to simultaneously grunt with you. I use Anytime Fitness, only annoying thing with that are the mirror mavens who scream and drop the weights on the ground for effect.

Answer really depends on your age and what you are trying to get out of your workout. Every ortho surgeon I know says if you use a straight bar for bench, shoulder etc. after 30 you can pretty much guarantee shoulder surgery in your future. Older joints just can't take the torque. As far as my work out I use dumbbells or machines for everything except squats and I use a smith machine for these; other than real light weight squats. I try and do my workouts based on heart rate and speed of the workout. While I want to get stronger, endurance and getting my heart rate to 140-160 at the end of the workout is my main goal; then have it down to 100 or under within 5 minutes. The only rest I take is 1 minute stretches periodically. Typical workout is 45-60 minutes. I am 52 this year and trying to lift heavy weights or get some max is just not what I need or want at this age. I do believe there are some great kettle ball workouts and use them on my heavy cardio days; however I also believe there are certain core exercises (bench and squat) that are musts in any solid workout routine. Bottom line though is if you are spending 30 minutes a day doing something you will be better off in life. Good luck.

OP - Saw these on Woot > adjustable kettlebell.

Cool. So I ended up getting a simple power block adjustable for the short term, but like the adjustable kettle bell. I may end up getting a larger set and perhaps something bigger for the garage.

Definitely want to go the machine route, and know I have to get moving, I ain't getting any younger.
