Mrs. Knives has always wanted to go to Las Vegas. I have finally relented and we are going at the end of the month with 2 other couples who have already gone several times. I can’t really get excited about going as I don’t want to drink constantly (a couple is fine) and gambling to me is boring. This weekend we are getting together with the others to pick some shows (yaaaay 🙄). The Golden Knights are out of town when we are there. I am much more of a mountain/national park/cabin on the lake vacation guy. What shows do you recommend?

Not really a show guy but I did see Moulin Rouge at the MGM one time. It was pretty good but a tad risqué. Hoover Dam is a good trip and Red Rock canyon is close by for a good day hike. There are plenty of non show, gambling and drinking activities there during the day then do the gambling ect at night. Lots of really good food options there too. Steer clear of the timeshare type show and ticket salesmen that are everywhere. They are exactly what they seem like.

I am not much of a show guy either. The hiking and Hoover Dam would interest me more but if I stay with the group it will be shows and gambling and what they call “people watching.” We only have a few days. Hopefully I am pleasantly surprised…

The people watching there is really good. Lots of people doing stupid stuff to keep you entertained. I like Vegas but can only do a few days at a time there.

Las Vegas is a pretty miserable place, generally. I second the recommendation to get out of town and visit the Hoover Dam. Mount Charleston and Valley of Fire are nice places to walk around, as well. When I was broke grad student, I enjoyed the Mandalay Bay pool and the Bellagio breakfast buffet, but Vegas holds no appeal at this point in life.

It’s worth seeing. Walking around the incredible hotels/casinos and eating really good food isn’t bad for a couple days. Maybe pick a card game you like and play the low minimum tables.
Unfortunately, low minimum tables are a rarity. On weekends most places on the strip its 25. Off strip you can still find some 5-dollar tables but that's usually on weekdays. 10 to 15 is normal.

If Red Square is still there, it's a fun place to get some caviar, blinis, and vodka. Back in the day, they would give you fur coats to wear while you sat at the ice bar. The aquarium at Mandalay Bay is a nice, cool place to kill a couple of hours.
I was there around the holidays, and it was closed. If you want some old Vegas try Battista's Hole in the Wall on Flamingo just past the Cromwell. Old school Italian joint. After hit the Stage Door Casino for a few cheap drinks. Be warned it is a dive.

I was there a couple years ago on a weekend and I think I played 3 card poker at a $10-15 table on the strip. But to your point they aren’t always easy to find or get a seat at. But regardless the OP can take $200 out and have some fun. Or go to the sports book and place a bunch of smallish bets on whatever basketball games are going on which gives you a rooting interest. And then put a futures bet down on FSU to win the NC this year.

Oh man I love Vegas and go 1-2 times a year. Of course it helps going with a friend who has high MGM status so we get limo rides to/from airport, 2 bedroom penthouse suites, and all restaurants/shows at MGM resorts are comp.

Mob museum and if you have any interest in paranormal the haunted museum is very interesting.

Is your friend Mr. Papagiorgio?

I’ve been to LV once for a wedding and never got off the Strip even though I was there four days. The people watching is interesting especially on Friday night when all the women from Cali arrived.
Think Real Housewives of Beverly Hills wannabee fails. Note to the dummies: Too much Botox and cheap boob jobs are too obvious and not attractive to the rest of America.

I’d go back to see the outdoor attractions like Hoover Dam but aside from that I did have a fabulous meal at Craft Steak at MGM. Don’t know if it’s even there anymore. I’d rent a car and get outta town maybe down to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon but that’s a seasonal trip. Maybe not even stay on the Strip but at one of the resorts just a bit out.
The smoke in the casinos is still unbearable but maybe I’m just not okay with smelling awful after being in there. Do people not know how to gamble without a cigarette or is it the last refuge of nicotine addicts? 🤧
I did come home with a lot more money than I went out with though. That’s never a bad thing. 😏

According to Trip Advisor Craftsteak is still there. Will have to try it. I’d like to do the out of town stuff but the crowd I am running with will not. I may do a lot of sitting by the pool in the warm sunshine….

Alot of places are going smoke free especially since all the vaping goons have grown in numbers.

So far I am not really impressed with Las Vegas, however we drove through a snow storm to get to the airport (3 inches in Dubuque I am told and quad cities was just rain) and landed in 75 degree weather so there is that….
