LATE REPORT
WARCHANT TV: Jimbo Fisher's post-practice interview
Jimbo was pretty pleased about the defense and sounded a little low on the offense. Said he had a hard time putting his finger on what was making life difficult for the offense. "I don't know if it is because the defense is good or the offense is bad," Fisher said.
Most of the questions were about Dalvin Cook's return. Fisher said Cook worked out on his own while he was away on an indefinite suspension. There's two schools of thought here. Short-term is that Cook was able to jump in right away and take reps as if he's been in camp the whole time. Long-term is knowing FSU has confidence in two backs between Cook and Mario Pender.
Other than that, Fisher said there were no injuries from Saturday's scrimmage. It actually took him a few seconds to think about what happened because Saturday "felt like so long ago." He did say the defense got a little too aggressive. Fisher said the offense had some eye candy specifically designed to test how aggressive the defense was in the scrimmage. As for the offense, "They made some really big plays at times and not enough consistency and then...when they take their time and you could see us move the ball down the football field. We have a chance to be a very good football team. We're just a long way off from it right now.
Fisher hopes they can get DB Tavarus McFadden back within the next week or so. McFadden has been out with an ankle injury while WR Ja'Vonn Harrison has a MCL sprain. Plan is to have him back toward the end of this week or the beginning of next week.
We're getting players now and we'll have a full Cook story, a video from Jimbo's presser and more coverage a little bit later.
EARLY REPORT
Of the big news from today's early portion of practice was the return of running back Dalvin Cook. He didn't have to acclimate and spend his first few practices in shorts and then shells before getting into pads because school already has started. There was certainly a positive vibe around practice. One FSU assistant even said, "We got our No. 4 back!" before the team started stretching. Even Dalvin Cook's mom was at practice but she was sitting outside the facility as media was walking out.
As for the offensive line, the first team was Roderick Johnson, Kareem Are, Alec Eberle, Wilson Bell and Derrick Kelly. Another OL, Cole Minshew, was out but spent time on the exercise bike. OL Abdul Bello was also out.
DE Chris Casher was out and dressed in shorts but was doing more running around for conditioning purposes as he recovers from knee surgery.
DB Tavarus McFadden was out again. He's had a few practices where he's been in pads. So far, he's been held out of a few practices already.
WR Ja'Vonn Harrison was also out of practice. WR Nyqwan Murray was out with his left hand wrapped up. He'll be out a couple more weeks.
LB Sh'Mar Kilby-Lane was dressed in full pads and was participating. Kilby-Lane is no longer in blue.
K Roberto Aguayo was measuring his distances before launching field goal attempts. P Cason Beatty was getting some elevation on his punts, hitting the rafters of the indoor facility and falling to the ground.
Only pro team at practice was the Chargers.
We're set to meet with Fisher and players sometime after 5:30 p.m.
As far as we know, here's the schedule for the rest of the week.
>Wednesday's 3:45 p.m. practice is open to the media.
>Thursday is closed to the media
>Friday's 3:45 p.m. practice is open to the media
>Saturday and Sunday are also closed off to the media.
Until next time. Goodbye for now.
