LATE REPORT
JImbo said it was a good Tuesday practice. Seeing a lot of positive things. Very physical on both sides of the ball.
As for Tyler Hunter's status, Fisher said he has a concussion. Tyler was there all practice but not participating. Fisher was asked if that makes it more imperative that the young DBs get ready for Saturday, and he said yes but that he feels confident with other scenarios as well.
"I like where we're at with all that," Fisher said.
Fisher was asked about Mario Pender's status, and he said he's doing well but it will be "a while" before they even think about bringing him back.
It was a pretty quick session. And now we're doing player interviews. So will have more soon, including the video. Sorry so short.
EARLY REPORT
Florida State's open portion was packed full of interesting details on Tuesday. One of them being freshman defensive back Derwin James catching a few passes with the receivers. Doesn't appear as if it was planned as James was asking if he could get a few reps. Now, for the news:
DB Tyler Hunter was at practice but did not participate. He was on the stationary bike during open portion. As for the defensive backs, there was no real rotation of "one's" and "two's" when they go through backpedaling drills. That said, freshmen Marcus Lewis and Tarvarus McFadden were paired together when they went through drills together. Both caught their passes with ease. FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said during Monday's press conference, the two are part of the four-man race to replace injured sophomore Trey Marshall at the "star" position against Georgia Tech. Other candidates include Hunter and former walk-on Javien Elliott.
RB Dalvin Cook was also held out of practice so he can rest. Cook was held out of Monday's practice for the same reason. The former Miami Central star told media early Tuesday afternoon his resting days allow him to get in some conditioning. He also said getting rest earlier in the week, makes him stronger closer to kickoff.
Linebackers coach Bill Miller wasn't messing around during 1-on-1 tackling drills. There was a play when Reggie Northrup, who was the ball carrier, shook another linebacker. The linebacker was forced to go through drill again until he wrapped up his man. Another linebacker, on the same drill, was also juked to the point where he fell down. Miller told those who fell to do the drill again and then they were made to do push-ups as a punishment. He "expressed" his thoughts and appeared to get his message across to those who didn't perform. The linebackers also worked on how to work around low tackles, something that's part of Georgia Tech's offense.
Another group worth keeping an eye on has been the defensive linemen. On Monday, they went through chute drills. Monday's drills opened with them going under the chute but they extended and retracted their hands repeatedly. Almost as if they were simulating pushing off a man to stay low. On Tuesday, they did sled drills yet the theme of staying low was ever present. Defensive line coach Odell Haggins had the line stay low in their stance yet burst through to rise up on their follow through. Haggins was even practicing the motions during the team's stretches.
Here's your Tweet of the Day:
The NFL teams at practice were the Broncos, Ravens and Steelers.
We're slated to get Jimbo Fisher around 6 p.m. and players afterward.
Until then. Goodbye for now.
