Jacob Riddle stands at the top of a winding mountainside road, his longboard in hand, preparing to make his first ride of the day. The downhill run is treacherously steep, with six sharp, hairpin turns.

Taking a deep breath, Riddle sets his board on the ground. He places a steady foot on the front and readjusts his helmet. Then, he kicks off.

Within seconds, Riddle is flying downhill at 20 miles per hour, and he’s still gaining speed.

I used to board around Tally as a kid and still have scars to show for it. We often hit new developments in the Lake Jackson area that had smooth, clean pavement and good hills. We also got run out of the parking garage under the Fla. Capitol building one night. There was a drain pipe along Hwy. 27 out in Jefferson County that some of my buds would hit, but I never made that run. This was an early version of the swimming pool and half pipe experience.

Our equipment was very crude by comparison. The wheels and boards we had were literally the first generation removed from the early ceramic wheels and non-flexible wooden decks. Also, the trucks were rigid and would have been life threatening on the runs these cats are making.

Prefer sweating in a five point harness to skinned knees and elbows, but I love the sensation of speed.

Well, it was written by an intern for our local thrice weekly rag. Granted that it is not up to Locker Room standards. Not many newspapers, magazines, or message boards have great editors these days as staff is cut to the bone. Glance at headlines on most publications these days and you will see...
Having said that, when it comes to our little paper, I am much more interested in the story than precise writing.
