Not too long ago, the entire state of Louisiana was on the verge of bankruptcy. Its been well documented that LSU academics have taken a big hit over the last few years with lack of funding. How can LSU afford to buy out Mile's contract and then lure Fisher over with a $7 or 8 million contract, plus several more million for a new coaching staff??

Its seems bizarre that LSU was talking about closing down numerous degree programs and letting go professors, can now talk about a $15 million investment in football.

It's because it comes from the TAF but I think having your academics in shambles will hurt your recruiting. Plus I think they have to tap into the TAF funds eventually.

It's the art of the deal....make things sound worse than they are, cut funding from some high profile needs for attention, then live life as is was.....like congress and continuing resolutions and government shutdowns...

Yes it is booster money. LSU may be broke, but the boosters are fine. I'm pretty sure the governor vetoed the firing last Fall because of the state budget crisis - not that the boosters couldn't afford it, but that it would look bad to see the boosters writing that kind of check while the rest of the state was tangled in the budget mess.

I think now is a better time, all state legs are in downtime leading up to the elections, but at the end of the season the boosters might find themselves in the same spot - so it is actually easier to get the firing through the gov now than in Nov/Dec.

It will hurt them eventually and the public perception of this will be bad.

Most CFB programs do not care about public perception. Baylor, FSU and a few do care because we endured media excoriation.

It's not a bad point, but it's Lsu football so they will rise up and get it done.

Now if I were a state legislator and I had to explain to my constituents that the highest paid man in the state is making that kind of money while we are cutting program after program.... well that's not a position I would want to be in, but they are probably mostly LSU grads anyway

Miles' and the new coach's state salaries are most likely no more than a long term tenured professor. Same with Fisher at FSU. The rest of the money comes from booster and endorsement funds.

It will hurt them as far a public perception, but they are going to pay big bucks for the next guy.
I know they will pay the money and get a good coach but eventually the financial disaster at that school will affect every part of it.

Florida is not teetering on financial failure. And Florida has several public universities that are well-regarded. Louisiana is a special breed of bad.

Florida has one school, not several, in the Association of American Universities.

The Association of American Universities is not the absolute standard, it's right up there, but there are some very, very good universities that either don't qualify for membership because of bureaucratic restrictions, or don't want to be in it for other reasons. That small college over near Tampa, whose name escapes me, is very, very good--The New School or something like that...

I've been living in a hotel practically on the LSU campus for the last month and a half for work. Their campus and stadium don't even compare to ours. Also everyone is a poor here, no way Jimbo leaves for this dump.

You do realize you just described Florida as well?

Florida is not teetering on financial failure. And Florida has several public universities that are well-regarded. Louisiana is a special breed of bad.

I reread you post again and it does not have the word financial in it.

In bred rednecks. Check Florida
Don't care about quality education. Florida check
Swamp boats and pick up trucks. Check Florida again
Public schools under performing across grade levels. Check Florida again

State revenue is down because of oil, big LSU boosters made their money from oil. Don't kid yourself they are no USC, Ohio State, Michigan or Notre Dame. Their resources are by no means endless.

You guys are so funny! Born and raised within 15 miles of LSU. Attended there and have way too many connections there.

What you don't get is Louisiana is a state of only 4 million people. LSU is everything to them. If you think everyone there is broke visit Zachary, Covington, mandeville and a hundred other places. Yes areas surrounding the campus are not representative of the entire state.

I personally know families that can pay Les Miles 10 million payout with a personal check.

The fact that the governor and elected officials had cut funding and caused major problems with the university budget has NOTHING to do with the athletic foundation paying a coach more than Nick Saban. Peace out!

Zachary is a dump. I live 15 minutes from Zachary.

Yes, they are from Louisiana Nol-esq. Happen to be friends with numerous families who run the boat, helicopter, shipping to and from the oil rigs. Also grew up when the "Tuscaloosa trend" oil find made thousands of farmers and land owners multi millions in south Louisiana. These are not broke " red neck crackers" as another poster referred to them.

Lot of money there to spend for something they believe in.

For the record I am FSU first and LSU second. Raised my family here and will be here until I die. Just offering a opinion that most here do not understand. In Louisiana all they have is LSU. Unlike Florida that has several college teams to choose from. No disrespect ever intended, sir!

El-rod, tell me that Zachary high school does not have better facilities than 3/4 of division 2 schools? They have their own school system that is #1 in the state. Many top neighborhoods and 7 private golf courses.

Tell me why it's trash???? Lived there for 20 years sir and loved it!

school system ranked #1 bc they "teach the test". Many are moving to get out. Silliman, CPS, and WF are getting plenty Zachary kids. Yes they are new and nice. Football field is nice. They also pay the highest property tax rate in the state. But lets be honest, its not like a suburb of Dallas or Houston. Still have plenty open drain ditches full of litter. The city grew too fast and traffic is ridiculous bc of one main artery.

The golf courses are not anything nice either. Copper Mill is nice though but definitely not a top course in the state. I think Zachary is a better place to live than in BR but that doesnt make it a wonderful place.

I exaggerated in my original post. It is not a dump but I don't consider it nice either. Just my opinion.

He's right about Covington & Mandeville though. BR has it's nice areas, but I don't think I'd want to live there over Tally.

YES covington and mandeville are nice. South BR is nice also. But I do not think Zachary is in the same league as South BR or Covington/Mandeville. Just my opinion.

BTW, I live in St. Francisville.
