Will be headed to CDMX for the weekend with a three buddies.

For those who've been, would love your recommendations on restaurants, bars, nightclubs, things to do during the day, etc...

Have heard great things about the food / mixology scene down there.

We'll be staying at the edge of La Condesa and Zona Rosa. Been thinking about a day trip to see at Teotihuacan but will play that by ear as I assume I'll visit again in the next few years.

We stay very active during the day and also try to get after it till about 3-4am. I'll sleep when I'm dead.

Follow up question -- can I use the WatchESPN app in Mexico when signed up via a US cable company?

I know in Europe/Asia WatchESPN doesn't work, not sure about the rest of North America though.

Used to go to the Zona Rosa on every layover to get some beers and check out the trinkets.

Didn't they just have a huge ass earthquake there? Also the smog and traffic is beyond ridiculous. Have fun.

I'm a travel junkie but you couldn't pay me to visit Mexico right now. Not even Mexico City, which is probably safer than all of the other places that are being overrun by drugs and the drug war.

To each his own.

Obviously Mexico is a dangerous place.

I conceded Mexico City is probably less dangerous than many other parts.

Not wanting to send this thread into a tail spin but I have said the same thing about a couple of your posts in the past on fears you have.

But you are correct MC has a lot of American tourists each year. Don't go into bad areas and use the yellow certified taxi. Probably a higher chance of being kidnapped and held for ransom if you appear to be quiet wealthy.

Mexico is dangerous for tourists now. You could argue that point , but you would be wrong.

THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE HAS ASSESSED MEXICO CITYAS BEING A CRITICAL-THREAT LOCATION FOR CRIME DIRECTED AT OR AFFECTING OFFICIAL U.S. GOVERNMENT INTERESTS.

https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/alertswarnings/mexico-travel-warning.html

Tourists should be wary of persons representing themselves as police officers or other officials. When in doubt, ask for identification.

If I didn't travel anywhere the US govt had a warning or issues, I'd be so bored.

As for Mex City all this fear seems overblown

I'd highly recommend the visit. Food and drinks are fantastic. Also Charles Kelly isn't anywhere around, so that's a plus.

May want to let Tribe know up front that flying to New Zealand isn't one of your options. :D

I’ve only been to Mexico City once about 15 years ago or so when I was interning with the Department of State Office of International Relations. So 1) it was so long ago I don’t really remember anything useful and 2) it was mostly a work trip so I didn’t do much touristy stuff. I basically ate some Mexican food and was given a trinket from the Mexican Consul General and that was it.

Yes, this. If you are going to appear wealthy, be loud and obnoxious about it!!!

Just got back, would highly recommend the trip.

Great food, mixology, vibrant culture, clubbing, live music, and the pyramids nearby are easy to see and a nice get away from the city.

Contrary to what folks would lead you to believe, I witnessed zero crimes. Not even a kidnapping or beheading.

Very nice. I’ll have to go back sometime and actually get to see the city.

Mexico is safe Ignore the travel advisories for the most part. Imagine any foreign country detailing the crimes in the US. Don't got to Las Vegas etc. I was staying in Sinaloa on a surf trip in June protected by the Sinaloa cartel. A cartel has an interest in all businesses not just running drugs. We were treated fantastically because we were paying guests of the surf camp/hotel.

What does a foreigner think when they read about mass shootings in Las Vegas and Orlando? What does their government department issue?

Like any big city, don't do anything stupid. If you are driving alone from San Diego to Cabo, I might have different advice.

Oh forgot to mention that the Aztec Ruins "Garden of the Sun" I think are a must see. I see now that you have returned, so maybe worthless advice?

We made it to Teotihuacan, great little day trip - climbed to the top of the Pyramid of the Sun.

And I totally agree with your previous post. Fears of most countries are totally overblown. Every city has its dangerous areas, Tallahassee included. Generally as long as you're don't make yourself a mark and don't wander to the wrong areas, you're fine.

Like you said, with the amount of gun crime and "American Carnage" <eye roll> going on here, I can only imagine how a foreign government could paint us in security warnings.

I would suggest, however, staying away from the border towns. That's a different animal.

Aren't there a lot of beautiful place in the 'Murica to visit? Hawaii, Alaska, Nebraska?

Definitely Hawaii. Alaska is a little overrated. Nebraska...I’d probably prefer to visit the Mexico from Apocalypto Painted in blue body paint than modern day Nebraska.

You're right, Kansas and Idaho are much better
