Man, I'd have been screwed had I taken any kids with me on my camping excursions in Alaska. Then again, good luck to anyone wanting to find me down on the Russian River. Ha!

Additionally, looks like I need to restrict my 14 year-old from babysitting...apparently I'm contributing to child abuse. LOL

A CPS representative also was on the property, and had concerns about the living conditions. CPS made four allegations, according to the official court document:

  • The family was not in a “stable living environment.”
  • The family had no electricity or water source, and was using kerosene as a means of heat.
  • The children were playing in the woods, cared for by a 15 year old.
  • The youngest child had a diaper rash.
  • The 17-year-old girl, who has Cerebral Palsy, was cold.

Insanity. It's the new normal.
My parents would have been under the jail. We slept in our pup tents from Scout camp all the time at Ft. Clinch in Fernandina and we loved it.
Well, I have to admit that none of us had diaper rash at the time.

Native Americans better be glad they didn't have anyone from the state checking on them.

Story seems to be all over the place. In the first line he says that they were camping on land they purchased and then later on he says that they had permission to camp on the land. Based on shoddy journalism I'll withhold my outrage.

I thought the same thing. Were they really going camping or did they move there on a semi-permanent basis. If the latter, I'd question the wisdom, especially with a child with special needs.

There's a big difference in camping and living. If this was where they were living then I agree with cps, if it was simply a camping trip then it's absurd. The article doesn't really clarify.

Define, "camping" vs "living". If I want to spend the summer living off the land with my kiddos (and I assure you I'm equipped and knowledgeable enough to do so), is that child abuse?

That depends, are the children also naked and afraid?

Assuming you have a permanent residence and this isn't your permanent home and the kids are well taken care of, then no, it's not abuse.

I say lock 'em up. These are the same type of parents who expose their kids to Phish and Greatfull Dead music which leads to joining those paddleboard and zipline gangs.
