I have a job offer in New Orleans and don't know anything about the area. I have two sons, one in highschool and the other in middle school. Any advice where to live and any information about the city if you have it.

My son is in graduate school there. We love to visit. Great food and lots to do. Like any big city, there are places to avoid and places you don't go after dark but everyone I talk to who has ever lived there really liked living there. Talking to my son he suggested you check out the Metairie or Kenner area.

I live in New Orleans now and have for almost 7 years. Amazing city with a lot of good. Certainly some bad as well but overall I am always jealous of people who grew up here. One thing to consider with kids still in school is that you definitely want to send them to either a private school or a good charter school. There are great ones in both categories but unfortunately the public school system here is totally broken. All things considered, I absolutely love NOLA and definitely consider it my home.

Grew up in the area and my son played football at Tulane. I would go to the North Shore and Mandeville. House prices are half of Tallahassee and you can live a great life at 1/3 the price of Florida!

I just moved to Baton Rouge for work three months ago. I've been to NO several times since moving here and had a blast every time. Most folks here will tell you If you have kids you definitely need to check into private schools like the other poster said. The people here for the most part have been great. Metairie is where most around here suggest living rather than in NO itself but it's like most places you have good parts and bad. Good luck with the new job .

New Orleans is a great place to visit, but I wouldn't ever consider living there!

Hope the job pays you a bunch of money!

I think there are better places in New Orleans than bourbon st.

Locals don't really hang out on bourbon. Magazine, tchoupitoulis, and frenchmans or French quarter st.

This. NOLA is an awesome city. A friend of mine lived in Uptown just off St. Charles and I preferred the local places in NOLA to the Quarter. Just like Tallahassee or anyplace for that matter, there are places I wouldn't venture to at anytime.

I've eaten there with locals plenty of times.

I have never once eaten there, and have absolutely no desire to ever eat there.

Why? I have eaten there and it's good. I wasn't totally blown away, I did like their turtle soup.I like Johnnys PoBoy in the quarter, thats a good sandwich shop.

Not a fan of the town. Two days there and I'm good for 5 years. Never feel safe but maybe that's just me. Its a different breed across the board. Good luck though.

New Orleans is my favorite city to visit. I don't know about living there with my current income. However, if I were rich, the Garden District or somewhere near Audubon Park would be my dream. The suburbs (Metairie, Kenner, Slidell, etc) are kind of "bleh" to me, not much character, but maybe I just haven't been to the right areas.
