New replacement for ethanol, and gas from air.

Couple of interesting news items in relation to gasoline.

EPA's new super fuel could replace ethanol:

And Harvard is making gas from air:

Although I am opposed to the thought of using our precious topsoil to fuel vehicles and the numbers for ethanol have never worked, this fuel certainly is a better choice (based on this article’s conclusions) than ethanol.
I am not sure I follow the air to fuel article. It seemed like the costs did not jibe...

I've been following the development of butanol as a fuel source for a few years now. It is no doubt better in every way as a fuel, but don't look for its widespread approval to be a quick process. The government has been propping up the corn market for years with renewable fuel subsidies which benefit the production of ethanol. There is a lot of money thrown to those in the house and senate to continue this support.

As for the CO2 to gasoline process, let me just say that there is a huge cost factor in scaling up from a small pilot operation to mass production. This will not be economically feasible for decades, if ever.
