NFL Washington drops Redskins name

Someone on Twitter had the best example for this situation. If a member of the Seminole nation sits across from you would they be ok with you calling them redskin? Of course not but calling them a Seminole Is perfectly acceptable.

In my opinion if they support the universities use of the name I would hope that would be good enough.

The history of Washington using the name "Redskins"is simple. They were the Boston Braves, and when they moved, they wanted a name change. Nothing in the history about respecting any tribe, etc. The Seminole name came from a student vote as the young football program needed to distinguish themselves from the UF gators. So "statesmen" was a strong option because of the state capital. But Seminoles won out as it was an indigenous tribe to Florida, they never signed a treaty, and they wrestled gators as part of a show they used to do. It is truly related to the state (as the Illini is to Illinois).

I am not sure if that is enough to push back. The input from the tribe is helpful, but there is no way to predict much in these times.

The term “Redskin” is a slur to Native Americans. This is the reason for the pressure to change the name. Seminole, Indian, Utes, Illni, Chiefs are not slang or slurs but attempt to pay tribute to the Native American.

Add “Braves” and “Warriors” (very generic and could be anything).

Also include “Fighting Irish”, but they’re white so I suppose that’s okay.

fedex and other corporate sponsors are behind the name change in washigton to be politically correct .Seminoles is the name of the tribe not a racial slur.

We should note the similarities between FSU and USC. Each school represents a proud nation of the past and repents them with respect and honor by sharing in their culture, including their warriors. USC warriors are on horseback donning the headgear and clothing of their nation. Seminole warriors are on horseback, and also donning the headgear and clothing of their nation. This is what we represent.

Their have been many past instances of disrespect to native Americans. Saying we are not part of that can be perceived as a weak claim. Showing what we are is a better approach. Align with another well known and respected example only makes sense to me,

Nothing more ironic than Nike pulling the "Redskins" name from their brand. This is a company that has made billions on dehumanizing people, yet they all the sudden care about humanity? Im so sick and tired of the hypocrisy. If we continue to look for the evil in everything, eventually there will be nothing left.

How long before the PC Police come after the Seminoles again??

The issues with the use of the term "redskins" has been going on for decades. This isn't a new fight. I think this slur is easily the most derogatory of the teams that identify with Native Americans as their mascots. I think the use of the Seminoles and other specific tribes is probably safe as long as that tribe continues to support the use of the name.

I honestly think if anything may change, it's the use and playing of the Warchant at not only our games, but the Braves, Chiefs, and the many high schools that play it.

I like the analysis but the proud nation of the past that USC now represents is a condom.

I don’t think too many folks would let the jokes distract from the message. Ask most any CFB fan and they see USC and their mascot as fine. I think if others would align with this positioning with us, we’d do well for ourselves. Better than defending the things that don’t represent us.

The critics will continue their crusade.
But as long as the Seminole tribe supports our Seminole name we won’t see any chance of a name change.
God willing.

Chop I am hoping that as well. I am concerned eventually it wont matter what the Seminole Tribe wants or How we are trying to promote and represent the Nation positively. The crazed mob will just demand it changed and the administration will relent.

Stand up to them. Fight back! Shout them down.

Don’t throw in the towel unless the Seminole Tribe calls for a change. I’m following this on Twitter and it seems like the masses understand the special relationship FSU has with the Seminole Tribe of FL once it’s pointed out.

If you aren’t a Seminole you get ZERO say in the matter. Zip. Nada.

How about this as a scenario. The Seminole tribe ask us not to change but Nike, the ACC etc etc... demands that we do and our own Admin betrays the very ones that have done so much for the University.

Fight back. Shout them down. Stand up and be counted. Again, if you aren’t a member of the Seminole Tribe you get ZERO say in the matter even Nike and the ACC.

They’ll just change the name to Skins.

They always be controversial name, the braves would be ahead of us.

Notice how no one ever asked the chiefs to change names which is closer to us.

Than Under Armour or Adidas would welcome us with open arms.

ACC isn’t demanding anything and if they kicked us out (which can’t legally do) than it be the best thing for our football program since Bowden

Why would they this is fortune-telling at it's? best to stop trying to drive up fear, until the Seminole Tribe of Florida tells us we have to change our name which will never happen in probably any of our lifetimes. I say we're good they came out in heavy defense of it last time. I don't see why they wouldn't again we provide a lot to them monetarily and through scholarships and respect their culture with dignity. Unlike a crappy NFL team with an owner who just doesn't care who is really just using the age-old adage that all press is good press. I'm not for cancel culture but calling someone a Red Skin is pretty low they didn't make the Clevland Indians change or the Atlanta Braves change I know Clevland got rid of Cheif Wahoo but they're still called the Indians Washington could do better especially in this climate and this goes back decades pre mass hysteria and cancel culture of today.

Exactly. It's immaterial whether or not it's an actual slur to the wokies.

Using a slur to combat the perception that something might be a slur. I like it.

Unbelievable people in this country cant and don't know the difference a racial slur and a tribe name.

Redskin has always been a racial slur, never liked the name. It's embarrassing that the nation's capital even uses that slogan. They want to honor native Americans they can find something way better and much more appropriate.

I think as long as the Seminole tribe is financially compensated.

For me this makes it less appropriate.

If it's just a payoff.....it's ugly. Not to mention the tribe is RICH as hell. They don't need money.

They either find it a compliment or not. If it takes money to make it OK....it's not OK.

And this is why we could be railroaded into changing our name. Even if the Tribe is fine with using their name, the elites will still demand that it be changed because the Seminole Tribe obviously does not know it should be offended! I don't know what we can do about these bogus intellectual elites who really believe they know best, on every topic?
I just can't see how if the Seminole Tribe backs FSU's use of the name, see's it as a an honor, how someone outside of our relationship can come in and force us to change it......

They are doing this all over the country in every area as we speak.
