Howdy folks. Gene, Ryan, Ryan and I were out at practice for FSU's first spring practice this afternoon. We were allowed in for the first couple of periods.

Here are some updates and observations from the early portion. We will have complete coverage after practice, including comments from Jimbo Fisher and a few players.

Ryan C. was spending most of his time watching the QBs. Here are some of his notes:

Both Deondre Francois and Malik Henry had power behind their throws in warm-ups, with Francois having the tighter spiral. Cosentino was also throwing a really nice ball, but maybe not as much velocity as the other two -- at least in those drills.

If we're going by what we observed of the rotations in fall camp or actual practice, it seems Cosentino was taking first-team reps. He was handing the ball off to Dalvin with Freddie working as the No. 1 fullback when they were paired with the running back. Francois was second, while Henry was third. That all was what we expected early in spring.

Here is more from the rest of the team:

Freshman DT Cedric Wood certainly has the size to play the position. Looks every bit of the 309 he's listed at. Has a powerful-looking lower body.

Juco DT Wally Aime is also impressive physically. Not quite as stout as Wood. A little taller and looks like he would be more athletic -- just based on physique.

LB Ro'Derrick Hoskins is listed at 245 and really looks it. Very big in the upper body, especially compared to Matthew Thomas, who's listed at 227.

Mario Pender is limited by injury, and was mostly rehabbing, along with Keith Bryant, Bobo Wilson and several others. Fisher ran down the complete injury report earlier in his press conference.

Freshman DE Janarius Robinson is out with the shoulder injury, but he is just enormous. Looks like he could be on an NFL roster today physically.

Very odd to see Chris Casher running passing routes and wearing a garnet (offense) jersey. He is a really big dude at TE. Could be interesting.

As you know, FSU struggled with punt returns last year. Not surprising one of the first team drills was working on the "hold-up blockers" who are supposed to slow down opposing gunners. Jay Graham was leading the drill, and Charles Kelly and Jimbo Fisher were both watching closely. They rotated a lot of players through that drill, including first- and second-teamers from the offense and defense. Jay Graham really praised Malique Jackson at one point.

This is VERY early, but here are the guys who went out with the first defense when we were there:

DL -- Sweat, Walker, Nnadi, Fred Jones (with Christmas out),
LB -- Pugh, Thomas and Hoskins
DB -- McFadden, James, White and Marshall

The first OL was as expected: Johnson, Are, Eberle, Bell and Ruble.

A couple former players were there, including Lamarcus Brutus and former NFL lineman Mario Henderson, who is coaching HS ball in Fort Myers.

As usual, strength coach Vic Viloria was making jokes to motivate the players. Talking to a group of early enrollees: "This is your last chance. We can still trade you in."

Will have more after practice.
