Smoothie King Center
KFC Yum! Center
Univ. of Phoenix Stadium
Sleep Train Arena
Papa Johns Stadium
Taco Bell Arena
Camping World Stadium

Who signs off on these things? Were the bids for naming rights so high, no one with a relatively normal name could compete?

You forgot Jimbo Fisher Stadium down in Hogtown.

Went to Smoothie King Center in March. There weren’t any cup holders at the seats. Kind of weird considering the amount of alcohol flowing.

How about Kansas State and "Bill Snyder Family Stadium"? It's one thing to name it after a revered coach,
but the whole damn family? What's up with that?

You have to admit, these are at least very different; how many Memorial Stadiums are out there?

Bill Snyder strikes me as the type of person who understands the sacrifices his family made to make his career possible. I view this as him thanking his family. But I understand what you are saying.

Talking Stick Resort Arena where the Phoenix Suns play.

As long as big companies are willing to strike checks to see their name on the wall, we'll have those. But you don't have to accept the new names. As a South Florida native, it'll always be Joe Robbie to me.
I had this conversation with someone yesterday. Progressive Field in Cleveland will always be the Jake to me. Same with Joe Robbie (though I agree with the Doak South comment). The Civic Center will always be the Civic Center or the TLC double C. Though not in use by a professional team anymore, Qualcom Stadium will always be Jack Murphy Stadium. I'm sure there are a handful of others that I can't think of at the moment. I'm a capitalist, so I don't begrudge the owners for selling out, I just won't refer to those stadiums by the bought names.

Candlestick Park went through a couple names before it was put out to pasture.
3Com Park
Monster Park

Never called it anything but Candlestick.

For whatever reason of all those names I find the University of Phoenix to be the worst.

The interesting thing is in Europe the soccer/rugby teams get the companies to sponsor via the uniforms. Meanwhile, in the states, for original big four the uniforms aren't touched but the stadium naming rights are. I'm guess the US will cave soon with the company patches coming to the uniforms soon..... Too bad this isn't the 80's I would of laughed if I saw the Atlanta Braves with "Red Man Chewing Tobacco" on the uniform....

NBA uniforms already have sponsors on them, though not as pronounced as in soccer.

European stadiums also frequently have sponsored names: https://www.eurosport.com/all-sports/top-20-funny-stadium-names_sto4708143/story.shtml

The sponsors on jerseys is the one thing about soccer that I don't like. You take a team like the Philadelphia Union that have an amazing jersey and then the sponsor just ruins it. I am certainly ok with sponsorships like this one above (Although I didn't realize the NBA was doing this already), but the primary logo being the sponsor has always bothered me.

It's a fair trade for the lack of commercials during play

the two really don't have anything to do with one another though. The teams get the money from the sponsorships, not the tv station who would normally get the advertising. I do enjoy that there's no commercials but I don't think it's related to the jerseys.

I don't actually mind the soccer jersey's having a sponsor on it. Maybe it's because I don't really know any different for soccer.

I don't hate it when it fits in with the jersey design. But there are times that it just really stands out, and there have been times I've seen people sponsor jerseys who I don't like as a company which actually would make me less likely to enjoy watching my team play if that happens. It's not the end, I just wish they weren't such large logos and more like what the NBA has done there.

Almost all of the stadiums in Europe are sponsored too.

The ones that aren't soon will be.

I was in NOLA for a conference and we decided to go to that arena for a NBA game. We could have sworn that place was 40 year old and was incredibly surprised that it was only 20.

This maybe a case of philly not making a smart decision in accepting sponsorship/marketing dollars, not unlike FSU letting IMG post a McDonalds billboard designed by a teenager on our football castle.

I'd gladly chew up jersey real estate with ads if it meant fewer commercial breaks (decline in TV revenue disbursements from conferences replaced by direct revenue from jersey sponsors).

We're beating Clemson 4-2 in the 5th inning in "Our House" as we post.
